CHAPTER 2 — A MORNING FULL OF SURPRISES The morning sunlight slipped quietly through the curtains, brushing against Caitlin’s face as she slowly opened her eyes. Her head felt heavy, her thoughts scattered. For a moment, she just stared at the ceiling. How did I get home? The question lingered, but the answer didn’t come. Fragments of the previous night floated in her mind — music, lights, laughter… and then nothing clear. And that dream. A strange, intense dream she couldn’t fully piece together. She frowned slightly, trying to hold onto it, but it slipped away like mist. “Typical…” she muttered under her breath. It wasn’t unusual for her to forget things after a chaotic night. A sudden knock on the door broke her thoughts. She dragged herself out of bed and opened it to find her cousin, Alisa, standing there — sharp, confident, and perfectly put together as always. Alisa had come from Germany for her studies in finance, and in many ways, she was everything Caitlin wasn’t: organized, ambitious, admired by everyone. ALISA Hey Caitlin… what happened last night? Caitlin blinked, still half-asleep. “What do you mean?” Alisa smirked, leaning casually against the doorframe. ALISA The guy who dropped you home. Who was that hottie? Caitlin froze for a second. The guy. Slowly, the memory returned — the club, his face, his voice… and then, unexpectedly, flashes of that dream. Her cheeks warmed slightly. CAITLIN Oh… him? Just a friend. She quickly brushed it off, turning away before Alisa could read more into her expression. CAITLIN (hurriedly) Wait—I have a meeting today. With a director. I need to get ready. That immediately shifted her focus. --- A little later, Caitlin stood in front of her mirror, now fully awake and determined. She wore a soft peach-colored outfit paired with a leather jacket — a perfect blend of elegance and edge. Outside, Manhattan’s winter painted the world in cold tones, the air sharp and unforgiving. But today wasn’t a day to hesitate. Today mattered. She grabbed her bag, moving quickly through the apartment. CAITLIN My keys… where are my keys? She searched frantically, checking the table, the couch, her pockets— Then it hit her. CAITLIN Oh no… my car. It’s still at the club. She groaned, glancing at the time. CAITLIN I’m going to be late… Without wasting another second, she pulled out her phone. CAITLIN Fine. Uber it is. --- By some miracle, she arrived just on time. Standing outside the office building, she took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. This was important — maybe the opportunity she had been waiting for. But just as she was about to step inside, something unexpected stopped her. A sound. Soft… fragile… unmistakable. A baby crying. Caitlin frowned, confused. “A baby? Here?” She hesitated for a second, then knocked on the door. VOICE (inside) Come in. She pushed the door open slowly— And froze. At first, all she saw was a man standing with his back to her. He was gently holding a baby, feeding it cereal with careful patience. For a brief second, the scene didn’t make sense. Then— He turned. And her breath caught. It was him. The same man from last night. The same man from her dream. Caitlin’s eyes widened in disbelief. CAITLIN Good morning… Mr. Sohilyo. The words came out almost automatically. But her gaze dropped to the baby in his arms. Her mind struggled to catch up with what she was seeing. And before she could stop herself, the word slipped out— CAITLIN (softly, shocked) …A daddy? The room fell into a strange silence, filled only with the quiet sound of the baby. In that moment, Caitlin realized something important— This story… was about to become far more complicated than she ever imagined.
