Chapter 11Charles eventually walked back down the hill to the White Hart, chilled to the bone but more clear-headed than he had felt in months. Once he had changed into more suitable clothing, Charles ate a hearty early luncheon and, feeling unaccountably weary after his meal, he slept through the afternoon’s promised rain showers. It was dark when he awoke, and although he would have been content to laze around his room, he had promised to attend a Wednesday evening concert in the Upper Assembly Rooms. Think of it as a chance to see Avery and even get a proper talk with him, he thought, as he dressed in his evening clothes which appeared none the worse for his country ramble.
