CHAPTER 3: BOARDROOM WAR
---
8:00 AM. BLUE RIVER TECH HQ. BOARDROOM.
40 people.
Long table.
Two CEOs.
One chair left between them.
Fate was cruel.
Sena sat down first.
Blazer perfect. Hair perfect. Smile perfect.
River sat next.
Same suit from last night.
5 o’clock shadow.
Glasses gone.
But he smelled like her shampoo.
Because she’d spilled coffee on him at 5am and he had to use the office shower.
Don’t think about it, River.
"CEO Kwon. CEO Han," BlueRiver’s chairman said.
"You have 20 minutes each. Then we vote."
River went first.
His presentation was brutal.
Clean. Numbers. Growth.
"Acquire us, cut 15% of staff, double profit in 18 months."
The board nodded.
Impressed.
Terrified.
Then Sena.
Her presentation was different.
People. Vision.
"Acquire us, invest in R&D, triple revenue in 3 years by keeping your team."
The board leaned in.
Hopeful.
When she finished, River asked the first question.
"Your revenue projection assumes no market crash. What’s your backup plan?"
Sena smiled. "Do you want the real answer or the CEO answer?"
"Both."
"Real answer: I don’t know. CEO answer: We adapt. Like we always have."
The room murmured.
Honest.
Dangerous.
Then one of River’s board members stood up.
Mr. Choi.
Slimy.
"CEO Han, we heard a rumor. H.Sena Group is 2 billion won in debt. Is that true?"
Sena’s blood went cold.
It wasn’t public.
How did he—
She glanced at River.
He looked just as surprised.
He didn’t do this.
"That’s confidential," Sena said.
"So it’s true," Mr. Choi smiled.
The room shifted.
---
PART 2: THE SAVE
Sena was drowning.
Debt question. Whispers.
Her 3 years of work unraveling in 30 seconds.
She opened her mouth but nothing came out.
Then River spoke.
"That number is outdated," he said.
Everyone turned.
"What?" Mr. Choi said.
"H.Sena Group restructured that debt last quarter," River said. Calm. "They’re down to 600 million. And their cash flow this quarter is the highest in company history. I checked. Because I’m thorough. Not because I’m dirty."
He looked right at Mr. Choi.
Warning.
Sena stared at him.
Why?
Why was he defending her?
Mr. Choi sat down.
"My mistake," he mumbled.
The chairman cleared his throat.
"We’ll deliberate and announce the winner tomorrow."
Meeting over.
---
PART 3: THE HALLWAY
Sena caught River by the elevator.
"Why did you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Lie for me. Save me."
"I didn’t lie," River said. "I read your filings. You’re right. 600 million."
"But you could’ve used it. You could’ve won."
"I want to win clean," River said. "Not like that."
Sena didn’t know what to say.
So she did something stupid.
She bowed.
90 degrees.
"Thank you, CEO Kwon."
River looked horrified.
"Don’t do that. I’m not your—"
"What? Enemy?"
"Yes."
The elevator dinged.
They got in. Alone.
Silence.
Then Sena said, quiet:
"You look tired."
"So do you."
"Still wearing my coffee?"
"Shut up."
The elevator stopped at floor 33.
Their office.
As they walked out, Sena’s phone buzzed.
Email from BlueRiver.
URGENT: Both CEOs. Please come back. There was a problem with the vote.
They looked at each other.
"Trouble," River said.
"Always," Sena said.
They ran back together.
---
PART 4: THE TWIST
Back in the boardroom.
The chairman looked stressed.
"We have a problem. The vote was leaked.
Someone offered BlueRiver’s CTO 5 billion won to vote for K.River."
Bribery.
Illegal.
And everyone was looking at River.
"Did you do this?" the chairman asked.
River’s jaw clenched.
"No."
"Do you have proof?"
River had nothing.
Except...
Sena stepped forward.
"I do."
She pulled out her phone.
Played a recording.
Mr. Choi’s voice:
"Just take the money, Kwon said it’s fine. He wants this deal bad."
The room went silent.
"That’s not me," River said. Low. Dangerous.
"I know," Sena said. Then to the room: "But it’s someone pretending to be him. And I have 3 years of experience knowing when someone’s framing CEO Kwon."
She looked at River.
"I believe you."
River’s chest tightened.
She believed him.
His enemy.
The chairman called security.
Mr. Choi was escorted out.
---
PART 5: ROOFTOP. 10PM.
They didn’t plan to end up here.
But the roof of their neutral office had chairs.
And the city looked pretty at night.
River was still angry.
"Someone tried to frame me."
"I know."
"And you defended me."
"I know."
Sena handed him a can of coffee from the vending machine.
He took it.
"Why?" River asked.
"Because enemies have rules," Sena said. "And rule number one: we fight fair."
"And rule number two?"
Sena looked at him.
"We don’t let other people hurt each other."
River stared at his coffee.
"My dad would’ve let me burn."
"Good thing I’m not your dad."
River laughed.
It startled both of them.
A real laugh.
Sena smiled.
Small.
Real.
They sat there.
Not touching.
Not talking.
Just... existing.
At 11pm, River’s phone buzzed.
BlueRiver Chairman.
He answered. Put it on speaker.
"CEOs. We’ve made a decision."
Sena held her breath.
River did too.
"We’re not choosing one of you."
"What?" they both said.
"We’re doing a joint acquisition.
3 months. You both run BlueRiver together.
If you can work together, you both win.
If you can’t... you both lose it."
The call ended.
Sena and River looked at each other.
"Joint CEOs," Sena said.
"Of the same company," River said.
"For 3 months."
"Together."
Long pause.
Then River sighed.
"Enemy truce is over, Han."
"What is it now?"
"I don’t know."
Sena stood up.
Held out her hand.
"Partners then?"
River looked at her hand.
Then took it.
Firm.
Warm.
"Partners," he said.
Neither of them let go for 2 seconds too long.
