THE ALL NIGHT OF THE BLUE RIVER

chapter 2 : The All Night 2:07 AM. NEUTRAL OFFICE. FLOOR 33. The emergency lights made everything look yellow. And quiet. Too quiet. Sena was asleep. Head on a pile of BlueRiver financials. Mouth slightly open. Undignified. River’s suit jacket was still on her shoulders. She’d mumbled "thank you" in her sleep 20 minutes ago. He pretended not to hear. He should go. He should wake her. Instead, River opened his laptop. "Fine," he muttered to himself. "I’ll just do both presentations." His plan: Step 1. Do his own. Step 2. Do hers better than her. Step 3. Win. Step 4. Gloat. Simple. 2:43 AM Sena jolted awake. Cold. Disoriented. And wearing River Kwon’s jacket. It smelled like cedar and expensive cologne. And him. Across from her, River didn’t look up. Tie gone. Hair messy. Glasses on. Glasses. Sena had never seen him in glasses. He looked... young. "What time is it?" she asked. Voice rough. "Almost 3," River said. Still typing. "Why didn’t you wake me?" "Didn’t want to." "Liar." River finally looked up. Caught her staring at his glasses. He immediately took them off. "I don’t need them," he lied badly. Sena snorted. "You look like a grad student." "And you look like you slept on paper." "I did." Awkward silence. Then the generator hummed. The lights flickered. Sena jumped. River didn’t. But he did slide a bottle of water across the table to her. "Drink," he said. "You’re dehydrated." "Are you my mom now?" "No. I’m your enemy. Enemies don’t want you passing out on my watch." Sena took the water. "Thanks... enemy." --- PART 2: THE TRUCE 3:30 AM They weren’t working together. They were working next to each other. Back to back on the floor. Sena: "What’s your strategy for BlueRiver’s R&D?" River: "Why? Gonna steal it?" Sena: "Maybe. What’s yours for HR?" River: "Maybe." Then Sena laughed. A real laugh. Not CEO-laugh. Snort-laugh. River froze. He hadn’t heard that in 3 years. The last time was at that charity gala. Before he stole her client. "What?" he said. Defensive. "Nothing," Sena said. "You just sounded like a villain in a drama." "I am the villain." "In your own story maybe." River didn’t answer. But his typing slowed. 4:15 AM Sena’s stomach growled. Loud. River didn’t comment. He just reached into his bag. Pulled out 2 sandwiches. Convenience store. Egg and tuna. He tossed one to her. "Eat." "I didn’t ask—" "Eat, Han. You’ll be useless if you faint." Sena stared at the sandwich. Then at him. "You came prepared." "I always come prepared." They ate in silence. On the floor. Like college students during finals. "You hate me," Sena said suddenly. River paused mid-bite. "Obviously." "But you still brought me food." "Selfish reasons. Need you awake to beat you properly." Sena nodded. "Liar." River didn’t deny it. --- PART 3: THE SECRET 5:00 AM They were delirious. Running on coffee and spite. Sena was presenting her slides out loud to test them. "And that’s how H.Sena Group will triple BlueRiver’s revenue in 3 years—" "Your projection is too optimistic," River cut in. "Your face is too optimistic," Sena shot back. River smirked. Then his phone buzzed. Chairman Kwon. His father. River’s whole body went stiff. He rejected the call. Sena saw. "Problem?" "No." "River." He looked at her. Tired. Guard down. "My father," River said quietly. "He wants me to win this. Says it’s ‘legacy’." Sena knew. Everyone knew. Chairman Kwon had bankrupted 3 companies and blamed River’s brother. River built K.River to prove him wrong. "He called me a disappointment at my brother’s funeral," River said. Flat. Like it didn’t hurt. "River..." "Don’t," he cut her off. "I don’t need pity. I need BlueRiver." Sena was quiet. Then she reached over. Not to touch him. Just pushed his coffee closer. "I’m sorry," she whispered. "Don’t be. Use it against me in the boardroom later." "I won’t." "Why not?" "Because... enemies have rules too." River looked at her. Really looked. For the first time in 3 years, he didn’t see a rival. He saw Sena. Tired. Sharp. Kind, even when she shouldn’t be. "Damn you, Han," he said softly. --- PART 4: SUNRISE 6:30 AM They finished. Two presentations. Both good. Both dangerous. Sena leaned back against the wall. Exhausted. "Who do you think will win?" "You," River said immediately. Sena blinked. "What?" "If I’m honest? Yours is better. You actually care about the employees. I just care about numbers." Sena stared. "Was that... a compliment?" "Don’t get used to it." The sun started coming up. Gold light through the glass windows. Sena was half asleep again. River was watching the city wake up. "You should go home," he said. "So should you." "After you." "After you." Neither moved. Then Sena yawned. And without thinking, leaned her head on his shoulder. Just for a second. River went completely still. Didn’t breathe. Didn’t move. Sena realized what she did and shot up. Red-faced. "I—I’m sorry! I was tired—" "It’s fine," River said. Voice weird. "Enemy lapse." "Right. Enemy lapse." They both stared anywhere but each other. Ms. Park walked in at 7am. Stopped. Saw them. On the floor. Sharing coffee. With a jacket on her. "CEO-nims," she said carefully. "The board meeting is in 1 hour." "Got it," River said. Standing. "Got it," Sena said. Also standing. As they walked to the elevator, Sena quietly handed him his jacket back. Their fingers brushed. Neither of them mentioned it. --- END OF CHAPTER 2 What happened: All-nighter - generator, sandwiches, 2am delirium First crack - River in glasses + remembered her coffee Secret revealed - His father, the funeral The lean - She fell asleep on his shoulder The compliment - "Yours is better" The war isn’t over.
