The sound of Nicolas’ father’s strong voice popped into his head as clearly as if Mr. Bennett was standing right there beside him. He recalled the first time his father had taken him on one of his morning walks years before. Nicolas had felt as if they had walked forever, and he remembered feeling hungry and tired. “Can’t we go home, Dad?” he’d asked.
