12 Lyra As a child long, long ago, Lyra had been taught that if she ever got lost, the best thing that she could do for herself was to stay put. So, that’s exactly what she was going to do. She doesn’t have many supplies, no way to travel other than her feet, and no way of knowing which way to go. The fear of being transported again keeps her feet pinned to the ground. So she builds up a fire to a monster size with a piece of flint and steel so she can hear its crackle deep in the forest as she begins collecting wood both for the fire and for making a lean-to shelter.
