A LOUD CRACK AND POP from the fire jolted Eva out of a feverish nightmare. She jerked off Cain’s shoulder onto the sand. “Are you afraid of me, Eva?” Iris asked, staring off into the forest toward the cave. “No. Why would you ask something like that?” Eva pushed herself up to a seated position with one arm and brushed off her chest with another. “You’ve been saying some strange things in your sleep.” “It’s been a strange night.” “You’ve been lying to me. I want to understand why.” Iris turned and gave Eva a hard, analytical stare. Eva’s cheeks flushed. “I just didn’t want you to worry.” “I am worried. Worried about you, but also about your other secrets that may come out to the island to hurt us.” “That’s not fair, Iris.” Eva looked away from Iris over to Cain, her brow furrowing.
