Day 2,392 JACOB LAY SLEEPING on the floor, wrapped in Eva’s worn wool gray blanket, hands tied behind his back, wrists red and raw. Eva tiptoed into the living room where they were keeping him. She perched on one of six chairs that Cain had crafted from driftwood and tree branches. A matching bookshelf, fully stocked with books that Eva had brought from the mainland, sat flush against the wall closest to Jacob. The room had one small window to let light in, like all the rooms in the house. Windows weren’t easy to make out on the island.
