Day 2,378 EVA WOKE HERSELF UP coughing. Her sleep had been restless, full of nightmares and anxiety. She rose, walked to the window, and peered out over the lake, searching for her boat. She spotted a duck floating near the shoreline. The water was still, no wind disturbing the surface. The pre-dawn light was gradually filling the sky, the brightest stars visible above the lake, the still waters inviting guests for a swim.
