Day 2,401 – Mainland ADAM EMPTIED A BAG of paralyzed plastic worms onto the wooden table in front of Eva. The sky was darkening as the sun set behind the cabin, the last rays illuminating the sludge on the lake through the bay window. The worms were green, brown, clear, yellow, blue, and red. Adam had gone back to the island. Eva wondered if he had hurt Iris, Cain, or Jacob. She didn’t dare ask, not now. As more and more of the worms cascaded out of the bag, they formed a mound, and the newest ones slid down the hill made of the others. All were motionless, lifeless and dormant this far from the island and their life source.
