Day 2,384 EVA SNORED, LEANING against Cain’s chest on the floor of the cave. His arms were wrapped around her, shielding her from the nighttime chill. Eva mumbled in her sleep, constantly switching positions, her sleep troubled and restless. Cain surveyed the river, wishing he could be in two places at once, protecting both the girls he cared for most. Something splashed in the water deep in the back of the cavern. Cain moved Eva gently to the ground, rose to his feet and rushed to the edge of the river.
