CHAPTER 2- COMFORT NIGHT

323 Words
The storm returned that night — loud thunder, flashing skies, and the kind of rain that made everything else feel far away. Ava sat curled on her couch, her laptop glowing in front of her, half-finished assignments forgotten. The day had been long. Her phone buzzed again — Liam: > “You okay?” She smiled faintly and typed back, > “Trying to be.” A few minutes later, there was a knock on her door. Of course it was him — soaked hoodie, messy hair, a small grin that said you don’t have to pretend with me. “I brought snacks,” he said, holding up a paper bag. “And probably pneumonia.” Ava laughed. “You’re ridiculous.” “Yeah, but I make you laugh. That’s gotta count for something.” He shook off the rain and settled beside her on the couch. They watched a movie neither of them paid attention to — sharing quiet, snacks, and unspoken thoughts. It was the kind of silence that wasn’t empty; it was safe. Halfway through, the power flickered out. Darkness. Then the soft sound of rain against the window. Liam pulled out his phone flashlight, setting it on the table between them. “You scared?” he teased. “Of what? The dark or my unfinished essay?” “Both.” They laughed again, but their voices faded into the stillness. Ava felt his presence beside her — the steady calm he carried everywhere. She leaned her head on his shoulder without thinking. He didn’t move, didn’t speak. Just breathed quietly. In that moment, the air between them shifted — not loud, not sudden, but gentle, like a truth finally being noticed. Maybe comfort had always been love in disguise. Maybe friendship had always been more than enough — until now. Thennight went on and on as they realized maybe they were meant to be more than friends, or not?
