Chapter Eighteen

1932 Words

Harper's POV: The courthouse doors felt heavier than they should have when I pushed through them, like the building itself was trying to keep me out or maybe warn me to turn around while I still could. But I wasn't turning around. Not today, not ever again. "Miss Lane, this way." Hailey's voice cut through the noise in my head and I followed her down the hallway even though every step felt wrong because Hardin was walking beside her, not beside me, and his hand kept brushing against hers every few steps like maybe they'd walked together like this before. "Harper, wait." Hardin's voice came from behind me but I didn't stop moving because if I stopped I'd have to look at him, have to see his face and remember how he'd left me standing alone in his kitchen last night like I was nothing.
