49 Chapter Forty-Nine In the Pirates' Lair Keelan woke to a dull throbbing pain in her jaw and moaned. The sound came out raspy and choked. Her mouth tasted like she’d chewed on a horseshoe and gargled with sawdust. She opened her eyes to inky darkness. In a panic, she squeezed them shut before carefully opening them again. Was she blind? She was in a heap on a hard floor. Rough planks pressed ridges into her cheeks. She wrinkled her nose at the stench. It smelled like a barn. The faint c***k of metal links when she moved quickly brought her to the realization that she was chained. Panic swallowed her breath, and she sat up quickly. A blunt rush of dizziness crashed into her, and she braced her hands on the floor to keep from collapsing. Her head was throbbing. Where was she? Slower
