“Ready?” No. No“I’m ready.” She tried to sound nonchalant, but her voice came out lumpy with trepidation. Landon had explained how he would wrap his arms around her legs and lift her up. He was strong enough to do so effortlessly, but she still wasn’t comfortable being hoisted off the ground in total darkness. Holding her hand, he picked his way through the stifling darkness, stopping when his boot crunched on the charred wood remnants of their fire.
