Alicia POV

Chapter 4 Alicia's POV The soft hum of the car's engine surrounded me as we moved through the city streets. I pressed myself against the corner of the seat, my knees drawn up to my chest like a wounded animal seeking refuge. My eyes remained fixed on the pristine floor of this expensive vehicle—a place so clean, I felt out of place. 'What does he want with me?' The question gnawed at me relentlessly. This man who calls himself Cassian, had appeared out of nowhere like some kind of guardian angel, except I didn't believe in angels anymore. Not after everything I'd endured. I glanced at him from behind the curtain of my thick mangled black hair. He sat there casually, as if he hadn't just picked up a starving, bloodied woman from a trash bin. His tailored suit was immaculate, every fiber perfectly aligned. He looked like he belonged in a palace, with servants scrambling to serve him. If it wasn't for the current situation, I'd have started drooling all over myself. ‘Damn, he looks so freaking fine’ My fingers tightened around the bloodied rod I still clutched. It was the only thing I had—the only proof that I could fight back, that I wasn't completely helpless. Even now, even as this stranger claimed I was something called his "mate," I couldn't bring myself to let it go. 'Mate. What the hell does that even mean?' The word echoed in my mind, foreign and strange. Was it some kind of... relationship term? My heart rate picked up at the thought. Had I gone from one captor to another? Was this just a different cage, dressed up in luxury leather seats and tinted windows? No. No, I wouldn't accept that. I'd killed once to escape. I could do it again if I had to. All this thought swirled in my mind, but deep down, I knew this man before me, who had held me like I was the most important person to him, would never hurt me. You'd ask how I know he wouldn't harm me, well, that's because I saw the colour of the aura surrounding him. I don't know how I do it or why I'm able to see something like that, but, one thing I know is I should never let anyone know about it. It's because I opened my damned mouth to my doctor that led to my present predicament. Although, I couldn't determine the emotion he was giving off, due to it being my first time seeing it. My stepfather has been the only one I saw the colours of emotions, because I started seeing it down in the basement where he kept me, plus, he was the only person I saw for years and his emotions towards me has been nothing but unpleasant. I turned my gaze elsewhere to control my wandering thoughts. Outside the window, I could see the world moving past us rapidly—buildings giving way to open roads, civilization fading behind. The car hit a smooth rhythm on the highway. I found myself breathing in sync with the motion, my exhausted body slowly beginning to relax despite my mind's protests. The leather seat was warm. The air conditioning kept the temperature perfectly comfortable. It was so different from the basement. So different from the alley. For just a moment, I let myself imagine what it might be like to actually be safe— The world exploded into chaos. The screech of tires, the sickening crunch of metal, the sound of breaking glass—it all happened in a disorienting blur. I was thrown forward, my body slamming against the seat in front of me. Pain erupted through my already fragile frame. ‘f**k_’ My thoughts were cut short as I felt my body turn lightweight and my vision blurred. My eyes subconsciously tried to find the man sitting beside me. I saw him move. His body twisted with an inhuman speed, positioning himself between me and the direction of impact. I saw his arm raise, bracing against the seat in front, his muscles tensing as if he were a living shield. The second impact came—harder and more violent than the last. The car crumpled like paper. Glass exploded inward in a glittering cascade. I heard the terrible groaning of metal, the violent screech of the vehicle being pushed sideways across the highway. I felt myself held protectively by Cassian as he used his body as a human meat shield, absorbing the force of the wreckage. I tried to move my body in a clumsy attempt to get up. " Please don't move" he said gently, his voice steady even as the world around us fell apart. I buried myself against his chest, one hand still gripping my bloodied rod, the other instinctively reaching for him—seeking the only solid thing in this moment of destruction. I heard my heart hammering against my chest, and also his. Then I heard the truck which had just hit the car we were in drive off. I heard the door to the driver sit open, then a curse followed. A loud sound suddenly reverberated, Cassian moved, still cradling me in his arms, he got outside. ‘Was that the door?’ ‘How the hell did he do that' He stood outside with his back facing the wreck. He adjusted our position to him carrying me princess style. I tried to peek above his shoulder but he held my head in place gently. "I don't think you would want to see that baby" he said whispering into my ear deliberately. I looked up at him just to meet his eyes filled with gentleness and something else I didn't want to accept that a total stranger would have for me. “Cassian, I called for second vehicle, it should be here in five minutes” I turned towards the voice and saw the man who was driving. ‘ How are they so nonchalant about this ‘ We literally just knocked on the gates of hell and somehow got away with it. The man who just spoke doesn't seem to get seriously injured, as I could only see a trickle of blood trailing his forehead. Although I couldn't see Cassian’s injuries, I knew it was worse than the man who drove the car. “ Brian, move away, you are scaring her” ________________ The end of the chapter Thank you for enjoying this novel.
