The Unwelcome Yet Wanted

Kiya’s POV My peaceful sleep was brutally murdered by the loud ringing of my phone. And as if that wasn’t enough, someone was banging on my apartment door like the building was on fire. Seriously… why do people have a habit of disturbing peaceful souls while they sleep? I groaned, grabbed my phone blindly, and ended the call without even checking who it was. The banging continued. Ignored. I turned to the other side, pulling the blanket over my head. Then I heard the sound of the lock unlocking. The door opened. Someone walked in. I didn’t even move. It was Ken. He had the spare key. And if it were anyone else, Hella would’ve informed me. Hella—my Google Assistant device. I named it that because it suited her annoying personality perfectly. “Kiya, get your ass off the bed and come out right now!” His voice echoed through the apartment. “Why on earth are you disturbing me?” I yelled back lazily from my bed. “Kiyaaaa—” Oh no. That tone. That big-brother-mode-activated tone. I sighed dramatically, threw the blanket off, and walked out of my bedroom. Ken was standing near the sofa, already dressed and clearly pissed about something. “What?” I asked, irritated. “Today is my parents’ anniversary,” he said slowly. “Did you seriously forget that we have to go?” My eyes widened. “Oh s**t—” I froze for a second and then bolted toward the bathroom. “Just wait! I’ll be back in seconds!” I rushed through a lightning-fast shower, threw on some decent clothes, tied my hair messily, and grabbed my bag. When I came out, Ken was already at the door, keys in hand, tapping his foot impatiently. --- --- We rode to his parents’ house on his bike. The morning breeze hit my face as the city slowly woke up around us. But my heart felt… uneasy. We reached their house soon. Ken parked the bike and walked straight to the door. I stood behind him, suddenly unsure. Ken knocked. The door opened. Uncle Ben stood there. My heart softened instantly. “Kiya,” he smiled warmly, eyes lighting up. “Come inside, child.” I hesitated at the doorway, unsure whether I was allowed here… or wanted here. But his gentle smile made me lower my guards. “Happy anniversary, Uncle,” I said softly and hugged him. He patted my head lovingly. From inside the house, a voice called out— “Kiya, please come inside.” I froze. That voice belonged to Kate. Ken’s mother. The woman who never liked me. The woman who never considered me family. This was the first time in my life she had ever called my name with such warmth. My chest tightened as I stepped inside slowly. It wasn’t her fault. It never was. Uncle Ben and my dad were brothers. My dad was married to Maria, Kate’s sister. And my mom… She was the woman who destroyed their family. My mother was the other woman. The homewrecker. I didn’t know much about her. She died while giving birth to me. I was the unwanted result of a one-night mistake that changed many lives forever. After my mom’s death, my dad returned to Maria, trying to mend things. But fate had other plans. They both died in a car accident. Just like that. Uncle Ben used to visit me with Ken when I was young because blood was still blood. My Nana raised me. She never filled my heart with hatred. She told me the truth—that her daughter was wrong. Kate was never cruel to me. She was polite. Kind. But distant. And I understood why. I was a reminder of the pain she and her sister endured. Still, she never stopped Ken from loving me. And for that, I respected her deeply. --- But today… Today was different. She had insisted that Ken bring me here. For the first time, I was welcomed into their home. And I couldn’t stop wondering— Was it because my Nana passed away last year and I have no one left now except Ken and Uncle Ben? Or… Had something else changed within her? Something I didn’t yet understand? As I stepped further inside the house, I felt it. A strange shift in the air. And somewhere deep inside me, an uneasy feeling whispered— This visit is going to change more than just relationships
