Rita’s POV
I was out in the city with Shelly, wandering through different stores inside the mall. She was excitedly picking out dresses, while I followed behind her with shopping bags in both hands.
It had been two months since Sam found his mate.
Two months of endless smiles, stolen kisses, and unbearable sweetness.
Sam was completely, hopelessly in love with Shelly. And Shelly—she was perfect for him. Kind, gentle, but firm enough to keep that i***t Beta in check. She balanced him. Controlled him. Loved him.
They were so in love that sometimes it made me wonder…
How can two people fall so deeply in love in such a short time?
For a brief moment, a childish memory crossed my mind.
Once upon a time, when we were kids, I imagined Sam as my mate.
But as we grew up, that dream faded into something far more beautiful—friendship. And I was happy with that. Truly.
Shelly was easy to get along with. Warm. Friendly. And now, I could proudly say that I had gained another friend.
I was pulled out of my thoughts when a strange scent suddenly hit my senses.
My steps slowed.
My wolf stirred.
The scent was different. Strong. Addicting.
Unfamiliar.
I unconsciously followed it through the crowd, my eyes scanning every face—until I saw him.
A man stood in front of an ice cream shop, paying for his order.
The moment our eyes met—
Time stopped.
My breath hitched.
My wolf roared inside me.
Mate.
He was my mate.
A human.
He had soft brown eyes and a warm smile that made something deep inside me tighten painfully. I took in every little detail of his face like my soul was memorizing him.
Before I could even process the shock—
A girl suddenly rushed toward him and kissed him on the cheek.
My eyes blazed with fury.
My wolf growled dangerously, claws itching to tear her apart.
That slut clung to my mate possessively, and he… he smiled at her.
They walked away together.
I stood rooted to my spot, watching their backs disappear into the crowd, my chest burning with emotions I had never felt before.
Jealousy.
Possessiveness.
Pain.
“Rita?” Shelly tapped my shoulder gently. “What’s going on? You look pale.”
“I—I have some important work,” I said quickly, forcing myself to look away. “Sorry to ditch you. Meet me at the pack border later. Call Sam to pick you up.”
I didn’t wait for her reply.
I followed them.
---
I kept a safe distance, watching from afar.
The more I observed that girl, the more my hatred grew. She was loud, fake, and clingy. She dragged him from one store to another, forcing him to buy things. When he turned to browse something else, she flirted shamelessly with another guy.
My wolf wanted to s*******r her.
They finally settled in a cafeteria outside the mall. I chose a table four rows behind them. With my enhanced hearing, I didn’t need to be close.
That’s when I heard his name.
Ken.
My mate’s name was Ken.
A strange warmth settled in my chest when I silently repeated it.
Ken.
For the first time in my life, I felt an uncontrollable urge to protect someone I barely knew. He was human. Weak compared to our kind. Vulnerable.
And he was mine.
I was just about to get up and intervene when—
Another girl walked up to their table.
Ken stood instantly and hugged her.
My breath caught.
Another one? Seriously?
But then the girl took out her phone and showed him something.
Ken’s face changed instantly.
The warmth vanished from his eyes. His smile disappeared. Pain settled in his features.
Then—
All hell broke loose.
The clingy girl stood up, shouting, throwing accusations, hurling insults at both of them. The entire cafeteria went silent as customers turned to watch the drama unfold.
Then the second girl calmly picked up the cold coffee from the table—
And threw it straight onto the b***h’s face.
Coffee dripped from her hair and clothes.
The cafeteria erupted in gasps.
My wolf purred in satisfaction.
I leaned back in my chair, lips slowly curling into a smirk.
That… was beautiful.
