Lucy sat on her bed, staring blankly at her phone. The message from Lucas’s sister replayed in her mind like a broken record. It hadn’t been harsh, but it was cold—guarded. The photo attached was of Lucas with another woman, their hands nearly touching at what seemed like a family gathering. No caption. No explanation. Just silence—and silence, Lucy had learned, often spoke the loudest.
Her chest tightened, but she fought the rising panic. She had just started trusting again. Just started letting herself hope. She wasn’t ready to fall back into the spiral of doubt.
She dialed Alina
“What if I’m being played?” Lucy whispered when her friend picked up.
“You’re not,” Alina said gently. “But you need to ask him. Directly. If there’s anything you’ve learned from the past, it’s that silence creates room for confusion.”
Lucy nodded slowly. She hated confrontation, but she hated emotional games even more.
Later that evening, she messaged Lucas.
*“Can we talk?”*
He replied instantly: *“Yes. My place?”*
“I’m not asking for perfection, Lucas. I’m asking for honesty. For consistency.”
He nodded. “I want that too. With you.”
And for the first time in a long while, Lucy believed him.
But trust is a fragile thing earned slowly, and easily shaken. And while one truth had just been shared, deeper secrets still lingered beneath the surface… waiting.
Lucas paced the room, nervously glancing at the letter he still hadn’t given her. The truth about the photo? That woman—Clarissa—was an old friend his family adored and constantly tried to pair him with, believing she was “a better fit.” But Lucas had never felt for her what he felt for Lucy. Still, he understood how bad it must have looked.
Lucy arrived, calm on the outside, but her eyes carried the storm within.
He didn’t wait. “That picture… Clarissa isn’t someone I’m dating,” he said quickly. “She’s just a family friend. My sister sent you that, didn’t she?”
Lucy folded her arms. “She did. Why would she do that?”
Lucas sighed. “She never liked how much I changed around you. She thought I became too soft. I guess she thinks Clarissa is... safer.”
A silence stretched between them. Lucas took a step closer.
“I’m not hiding anything from you. Not anymore. Ask me anything, and I’ll answer honestly.”
Lucy searched his face. He looked tired, but sincere.
“Then tell me why you really pushed me away back then,” she said quietly.
Lucas looked down, then back at her. “Because I was scared. Of how deeply I felt. Of depending on someone emotionally. I was raised to believe love is weakness.”
Lucy blinked. That confession hit deeper than she expected.
