Episode 18: Hope or Mistake

791 Words
Lucy lay awake, staring at the ceiling. The room was quiet, too quiet — except for the slow, steady breathing of the man beside her. Lucas. After weeks of distance and silence, he had finally opened up — or so it seemed. But something still didn’t sit right in her chest. Her body was close to him, but her heart was still holding back. She turned slightly, watching his profile in the dark. His face looked calm, peaceful… like someone who had nothing to hide. Then why did she still feel uneasy? She had let him back in. After the tears. After the uncertainty. After that trembling confession about his past. She believed him. Or at least, she wanted to. But something about it still felt off. *Was this another mistake?* *Was I too quick to hope?* Her phone buzzed quietly beside the bed. A message. She carefully picked it up, shielding the screen. *Nora:* *You sure he’s telling you everything? That perfume didn’t come from therapy, Lucy.* Her stomach dropped. A long silence passed. Then Elena sighed. “We kissed. Once. Months ago. He said it was a mistake. Said he still loved you. That he couldn't go through with anything more. I backed off. It wasn’t serious.” Lucy stared at her, the noise of the café fading. A kiss. He *lied*. Not about everything. But enough. Enough to break something inside her all over again. Was she stupid to believe in their second chance? Or was this just one more wound to forgive — one more truth to uncover? Lucy stood up, her chair scraping. “I have to go,” she whispered. As she stepped outside, tears stung her eyes — but not from heartbreak. From clarity. She would no longer beg for honesty. If Lucas truly wanted her, he would have to prove it. Not with words. With actions. And truth — the whole truth. Even if it hurt. Lucas stirred beside her, and she quickly locked the screen, guilt blooming like wildfire. She wasn’t supposed to be suspicious again. They were rebuilding. But why did her instincts keep whispering otherwise? *** The next morning, Lucy got dressed early. She needed air. Clarity. She took a long walk to the café near the park where they used to meet in the early days — back when love was simple. When there were no questions. No fears. She sipped her coffee, staring out the window, when a voice called her name. “Lucy?” She turned. Her heart skipped. *No. Not now.* It was *Elena* — Lucas’s former colleague. The one he said had transferred abroad. The woman with the same perfume Lucy had smelled on his shirt. “Elena,” she said, forcing a smile. “I thought But if he didn’t… she was ready to walk. Not because she stopped loving him. But because she finally started loving *herself* more. — “I did. Just came back to visit family. How’s Lucas? Still working insane hours?” Lucy’s chest tightened. “He’s… around. Busy.” Elena tilted her head. “He never answered my last messages. Guess he’s still weird about what happened.” Lucy froze. “What… happened?” Elena paused, suddenly cautious. “Wait… you don’t know?” Lucy set her cup down slowly. “No. I don’t.” Elena shifted awkwardly. “Oh God, maybe I shouldn't have said anything.” Lucy’s breath caught in her throat. “Elena. Tell me.” That night,Lucy walked back home slowly, the city buzzing around her, but everything inside her felt still — too still. Numb. She didn’t cry. She couldn’t. Instead, her mind was racing. She had *trusted* him. Again. And again. And once more, he had given her just enough truth to pacify her, while hiding the rest in shadows. *A kiss isn’t just a kiss when it’s concealed. It’s a lie.* When she walked into the apartment, Lucas was in the kitchen, casually making coffee — like everything was normal. “Hey, babe,” he said with that same tired smile. “I was thinking we could go out later. Maybe take a break, just the two of us.” She nodded slowly. “Sure.” But something in her tone made him pause. “You okay?” Lucy met his eyes. For the first time in days, she looked at him without searching for love — she was searching for *truth*. “I’m fine,” she said. “Just tired.” He gave a soft laugh, relieved. “Yeah, me too.” She turned away before he could see the storm building behind her calm face. She would wait. She wouldn’t explode. She would give him a chance to come clean.
