ISLA
My heart pounded in my chest so hard that I thought it would burst out.
I should have listened to Kade. I was a fool for not listening to his warnings.
That was the only thought in my head as I crawled backwards on the floor, my palms scraping against the cold tiles. My breath hitched. No matter how much I tried to look brave, my body betrayed me. I was shaking visibly. I was fvcking terrified.
Why didn’t I listen to Kade?
He had warned me. He had stood right there in my room and told me I wasn’t safe here alone. I had refused him. I had called him a monster, and I chased him away. Now here I was, alone, terrified, trapped and facing something far worse than I imagined.
The man stepped closer. The strange being that pretended to be my friend.
My back hit the wall, and I had nowhere else to go. Tears burned my eyes, but I refused to let them flow. Crying wouldn’t solve anything. Neither would screaming.
“Who are you?” I asked, my voice trembling despite all my effort to remain calm. “What did you do to my friend?”
The man chuckled, an ugly sound that made my skin crawl. “Oh, your friends are safe,” he said in a mocking tone. “For now.”
“For now?” my voice cracked. “What does that mean?”
He tilted his head, observing me like I was some kind of object, like an object to be measured.
“You must be the human mate,” he said with a sneer. “How pathetic.”
“I’m not a human mate,” I blurted out immediately. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. You’ve got the wrong person.”
He laughed again. Not because he was amused but because he knew the truth.
He crouched in front of me, close enough that I could smell him. Then he reached out and grabbed my chin, forcing my face up to his.
I froze.
“Don’t lie to me, human,” he said gently. “Alpha Rudolph will be very excited to meet Alpha Kade’s new pet.”
Pet? Was that what I was to them?
The word made my stomach churn. But before I could react, his eyes glowed red. Not gold like Kade’s. His eyes were red, cold and cruel.
I tried to fight him. I pushed his chest, scratched his arm, but he was too strong. His grip tightened, crushing my wrist as he dragged me up.
“Let me go!” I screamed.
Like a flash, a sudden pain exploded in my head and immediately, everywhere went dark.
When I opened my eyes again, my head was throbbing. My vision was blurred and it felt like the world was spinning around me. Cold air burned my lungs with every breath.
Then I realised that I wasn’t on the ground. I was slung over someone’s shoulder.
We were moving through a dark and thick forest. Snow crunched under his steps. My blood trickled down the side of my face.
“Where are you taking me?” I whispered. My throat hurt. My voice was almost gone. “Please….let me go.”
The man paused. “How are you awake so soon?” he muttered, sounding annoyed.
I didn’t respond. I didn’t even know how I was still conscious. Every part of my body ached. I was weak, my head still throbbed and fear weighed heavily on my chest.
The trees looked taller in this part of the forest. They were older. The air felt thicker, heavier, different from the normal world I lived in. I was certain I was in the werewolf territories.
I was far from home. The realisation hit me deep as tears slipped from my eyes.
“Kade…” I whispered.
Saying his name comforted me in ways I never expected.
The man scoffed.
“You think your alpha can hear you out here?” he said. “You’re far from him now, little mate.”
I ignored him. “Kade, help me,” I breathed, my voice barely louder than the wind.
He chuckled. “Let’s see if your mate will come to your rescue then.”
I squeezed my eyes shut as memories flashed through my mind. Kade was standing in my room, his calm voice warning me of the dangers. The way he looked at me was soft, but he didn’t dare to touch me when he could have.
Why didn’t I trust him?
Why did I push him away?
The man shifted me on his shoulder, gripping my legs tightly. The pain shot through my body and I began to cry softly.
“Please, let me go,” I whispered. “I won’t fight. Just don’t hurt me. I won’t tell anyone about this, I swear.”
He didn’t say a word. He kept walking deeper into the forest, farther away from the human world. I was so cold that it bit into my skin. My eyelids grew heavy, and I was so tired and weak.
But deep inside me, I wasn’t afraid anymore. Something stirred within me.
A strange warmth enveloped my chest, pushing back against the cold. My heart began to beat faster and stronger. For a moment, I felt connected like something far away had heard my cry.
The man slowed down. “What the….” he muttered, glancing around.
I didn’t understand what was happening but I felt it. The strong presence of something strong and angry is coming closer.
“Kade,” I whispered, hope gleaming in my chest.
The forest became quiet. Then, from a distance, something howled.
It echoed through the trees, sending a sharp fear into the air.
Fear gripped the man holding me. He stopped walking.
“What was that?” he muttered.
My heart leapt. That sound wasn’t just a howl, it was a warning.
The man growled under his breath, his grip tightening on me. “Shut the fvck up,” he snapped, as if I had any strength left in me to fight.
Branches creaked. Snowballs fell from the trees in heavy clumps. Then another level howl echoed in the night, this time, it was closer.
I felt the pull again in my chest. “Kade,” I whispered.
The man cursed. His red eyes flashed as he began to move faster. “You were not supposed to wake up yet,” he said in a harsh tone. “This wasn’t part of the plan.”
My vision was still blurred but I forced it open. I saw shadows darting between the trees. They moved too fast to be human.
A sharp growl rumbled behind us, so close that I felt it vibrate through the ground.
The man turned around just as a dark figure burst from the trees, eyes glowing gold, rage rolling off him in waves.
Kade had found me.
