The Shadow Prince

Chapter 2: The Shadow Prince The journey to Elarion’s capital, Caelith, was long and treacherous. The farther they rode from Elden Hollow, the darker the land became. Villages once full of life were abandoned, their homes burned and their fields salted. The Shadow Prince’s army had already begun its march. Aurelia rode in silence, gripping the reins of her borrowed horse. The pendant at her neck—the only piece of her past—felt heavier with each passing mile. "Are you all right?" Cassian asked, riding beside her. She hesitated. "I don’t know how I’m supposed to be this Starborn heir. I don’t feel like a princess. I don’t even know how to wield a sword." Cassian gave her a small, knowing smile. "You’ll learn." Before she could respond, the wind shifted, carrying the scent of something foul—ash and decay. The horses grew restless. Cassian drew his sword. "We’re not alone." The trees rustled, and then they emerged. Figures clad in black armor with eyes like dying embers—soldiers of the Shadow Prince. At their front stood a man cloaked in darkness, his presence thick with power. Aurelia’s breath caught in her throat. She had seen him before. In her dreams. "The Starborn must return. The throne calls for you." The Shadow Prince. He removed his hood, revealing a face both terrifying and beautiful—sharp cheekbones, raven-black hair, and eyes like molten gold. He smirked as he looked at her. "So," he mused. "The lost princess finally emerges." Cassian stepped in front of her, blade raised. "You have no claim to the throne, Kael. Stand down." Kael—the Shadow Prince—laughed. "Oh, but I do. The throne of Elarion belongs to the strongest. And the last time I checked, your little princess here hasn’t even learned to wield her power." Aurelia clenched her fists, an unfamiliar energy crackling beneath her skin. The star’s light within her flared, but she didn’t know how to control it. Kael tilted his head. "You feel it, don’t you?" His voice was smooth, almost teasing. "The power inside you. The throne wants you, Aurelia. But tell me, do you want it?" She didn’t answer. Kael’s smirk deepened. "No matter. I’ll give you time to decide." He stepped back into the shadows, his soldiers retreating with him. "But make no mistake, little Starborn—I will see you again. And when I do, you will either kneel… or fall." And just like that, he was gone. Aurelia exhaled, realizing she had been holding her breath. Cassian turned to her, his face grave. "You’ve seen him before, haven’t you?" She nodded. "In my dreams." Cassian sheathed his sword. "Then we must hurry. If Kael is already watching you, we don’t have much time." Aurelia looked to the darkened horizon. She wasn’t ready. But ready or not, the war for the throne had begun.
