Chapter 0007

1258 Words
Author’s POV Back in the dungeons, the two sisters, Peter, and Beta Isaac remain, settling in the aftermath of Christina’s dilemma. Though the halls are thick with cement and lime, the resulting tension vibrates through them with a foreboding harmony of its own. “s**t!” Becca clutches her bright red hair so hard that she almost succeeds in pulling it off her sensitive scalp. Almost thirty minutes have gone by, but they've gotten no information from the Alpha or his men to inform them about how the interrogation is going, and she's starting to feel restless. She should have ever let him take the poor girl away in the first place, but out of respect for her newly found mate, she had tried to be civil. Now, she feels like she should have thrown a knife at the Alpha and fought for her half-sister. She and Melissa have seen the consequences of broken family bonds, and how dangerous it can be, so when they got news of Christina’s location, they had been very eager to see the child their father hid away. Initially, Becca thought she would have found reasons to not like her, but one look at Christina's innocent eyes and fear-stricken face changed her mind instantly. She has to look out for her family. She looks to her sister, who leans against the bars of the cell, looking incredibly worried as she tries to reassure Peter that things will be fine, even if she isn't so sure herself. Becca can see it in the way her sister's lips tremble lightly as she speaks, and the wandering of her ice-blue eyes because she's unable to keep eye contact. “I'm going crazy just thinking about this whole . . . messed up situation,” says Melissa. “We should not have let him take her at all, because who knows what his ‘interrogation’ is going to entail?” “It's not like we had a choice,” says Becca, shaking her head slowly and looking at the ground. “It's his word against ours. This isn't our territory, remember?” She feels too guilty to even look at Peter who is so quiet within his cell, staring out at nothing. The muscles of his face have gone taut in just a few hours, making him look closer to his actual age. Since the chains around him are made of actual silver, he can't transform, and even if on some strange occasion he could, there will still be the issue of how he will leave the cell. He shuts his eyes, and even behind his thin eyelids, one can tell just how distraught he is, unable to help the girl he raised as his child. “Christina . . .” he says softly, looking pained at even the mention of her name. “I should have been more careful. I should have kept her safe.” Melissa lifts her head, finally finding it in her to look at him. “Peter, it wasn't your fault. We couldn't have seen this happening. Now, we just have to hope for the best.” She turns to Becca, giving her a rueful smile. “Right, sis?” The accusatory look on her sister's face pricks like a pin at Becca's heart. How could she have known that letting Christina go with the Alpha would have ended up not being the right choice? Should she have fought him instead at the risk of everyone else? “Well, we can't say that he's going to hurt her. He may just want to ask her some questions,” says Becca, already feeling sour as the words get past her lips. Melissa's eyes go wide with shock. “Can you hear yourself? Did you even see the way he was looking at Christina? You must be blind if you think he merely wants to ask her ‘some questions’. Who knows what kind of torture he's probably putting her through?” The defensive words sitting on Becca's tongue don't leave her mouth. Instead, she turns to Isaac, her mate, who stands by her side, looking torn. He did not envision this strange turn of things, and now, he is at a loss for what to do. It's strange how fortune and problems seem to have befallen her at the same time. She finds her mate but at the expense of her half-sister, who she only just found as well. A conflict arises within her, but there is little she can do aside from worry. “So you just want to wait around and see what the Alpha does to Christina?” Melissa charges, holding her older sister by her shoulders. “She's a kid, Becca. She doesn't know anything at all.” “I know that!” Becca snaps, pulling away. “I'm thinking, alright?” “Well, think faster because I don't think that Alpha has any good intentions.” “He could have your tongue for that,” says Isaac, speaking up for the first time since his Alpha left with Christina. “Watch how you speak about an Alpha in his territory, or didn't they teach you manners back in Cross Moon?” Melissa's eyes blaze with indignation. “Threats like that only make it more obvious about the kind of person that man is. You might trust him because he's your leader, but I don’t. You better find a way to rescue Christina, and fast.” Isaac growls, shifting closer to Melissa threateningly. A flash of hot gold burns within his irises. “You have no grounds to make demands here, girl.” “Can everyone just be quiet?” Becca pushes them away from each other before they can unleash their claws and cause a bloodbath. She turns to Isaac. “I'm your mate now, but that doesn't mean you automatically know me and vice versa. I need you to give in to your conflicted emotions and help us free our sister.” To Melissa, she says, “And you need to understand that fire doesn't always solve problems. Learn diplomacy.” The admonished pair exchange one last heated glance, before the tension in the air dissipates. They both murmur reluctant apologies at the same time, creating an amusing blend of grumbles. “Look,” Becca continues, “we need all the help we can get. Christina is like a cub thrown into the wild. She can't handle this kind of stress. Please, Isaac. I don't know what you'll tell your Alpha,” she moves closer to him, and softly palms his cheek, “but just get her out of there. Please.” A muscle ticks in Isaac’s jaw as he stares at his mate. Anyone watching can see how many emotions circle past his face; from worry, to desire, to determination. Finally, he gives Becca a simple nod and pulls away, before heading in the direction his Alpha went. Becca lets out a sigh of relief, hoping that everything works out in the end, and Christina is brought back safely to them. Melissa jumps an arm around her shoulder, startling her a little. “So, sis, your mate is hot, when he's not sucking up to that Alpha of his. When are you two going to start pumping out cubs?” Becca groans and slaps her sister's arm, although she can't help it when a small smile makes up her face. It doesn't last, however, as her thoughts are soon occupied again with concern for Christina.
