VALERIE I didn’t dream anymore. At least, not dreams that belonged to me. I would lie still in bed, eyes shut, but something else would open them from inside. My fingers would move on their own. I’d hear laughter — my laughter — echoing from somewhere just behind my ribs. When I woke, the sheets would be torn. My throat hoarse. Sometimes… I’d be somewhere else entirely.
