The Secret That Changed Everything

1595 Words
Everything suddenly became silent. I could hear Mia breathing beside me. I could hear the rain hitting the windows. But all I could hear was Alyssa's voice repeating inside my head. I'm pregnant. I stared at my phone. My fingers felt numb. For several seconds, I couldn't say anything. Mia noticed the change in my expression. She leaned closer. Mia: "Daniel?" I looked at her. She was smiling. That smile made me feel even worse. Mia: "What's wrong?" I swallowed. Daniel: "I..." My voice failed me. On the other end of the phone, Alyssa was waiting. Alyssa: "Daniel?" I closed my eyes. Daniel: "Are you sure?" There was a long silence. Alyssa: "Yes." My heart started pounding. Daniel: "How long have you known?" Alyssa: "A few weeks." I stood up from the table. Mia looked confused. Mia: "Where are you going?" I looked at her. I didn't know what to say. Daniel: "I need to take this." Her smile slowly disappeared. Mia: "Okay." I walked outside. The rain was still falling. I stood beneath the restaurant's roof and pressed the phone against my ear. Daniel: "Is it mine?" Alyssa became quiet. Then she answered. Alyssa: "Yes." My entire body went cold. I stared at the rain. Everything suddenly made sense. The dates. The messages. The reason she had come back. The reason she kept telling me she missed me. Daniel: "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Alyssa: "Because I was scared." Daniel: "You should have told me." Alyssa: "I didn't know how." I ran my hand through my hair. Daniel: "What do you want me to do?" Her voice became soft. Alyssa: "I want you to be there." I closed my eyes. Daniel: "I'll be there." The words came out before I could think. Alyssa: "Really?" Daniel: "It's my responsibility." She began crying. Alyssa: "Thank you." The call ended. I stayed outside for several minutes. I didn't know how long. I simply stood there, staring at the rain. Then I remembered Mia. I walked back inside. She was still sitting at the table. But she wasn't smiling anymore. She was looking at me carefully. Mia: "Is everything okay?" I sat down. My heart felt like it was being crushed. Daniel: "No." Her eyebrows furrowed. Mia: "What happened?" I looked at her. I wanted to tell her. I wanted to tell her everything. But fear stopped me. Daniel: "It's complicated." She stared at me. Mia: "That's what you always say." I looked down. Daniel: "I know." She reached for my hand. This time, I didn't move away. Mia: "Whatever it is, you can tell me." I squeezed her hand. Daniel: "I need some time." Her expression changed. Mia: "Time for what?" I couldn't answer. She slowly pulled her hand away. Mia: "Is this about Alyssa?" I looked at her. That was enough. She understood. Mia: "She called you." I nodded. Mia: "What did she want?" I looked away. Daniel: "She needs me." Mia became silent. Mia: "Why?" I couldn't say it. Not yet. I didn't know how to tell the woman sitting in front of me that my ex was pregnant with what she claimed was my child. Mia waited. Mia: "Daniel, what happened?" I finally looked at her. Daniel: "I need to go." She looked hurt. Mia: "You're leaving?" Daniel: "I'm sorry." She stood. Mia: "You always apologize." Daniel: "I know." Mia: "But you never tell me the truth." I couldn't look at her. She grabbed her bag. Mia: "I thought tonight was supposed to be about us." My chest tightened. Daniel: "It was." Mia: "Then why does it feel like I'm losing you?" I had no answer. She walked toward the door. Before she left, she turned around. Mia: "I hope whatever you're running toward is worth losing me." Then she left. I watched her disappear. And once again... I let the wrong person walk away. The next morning, I met Alyssa at a clinic. She was sitting alone in the waiting room. When she saw me, she stood. Alyssa: "You came." Daniel: "Of course." She smiled. But I couldn't smile back. Daniel: "Did the doctor confirm it?" She nodded. Alyssa: "Yes." I sat beside her. My mind was racing. Daniel: "What happens now?" She looked at me. Alyssa: "I don't know." I stared at the floor. A child. My child. The thought terrified me. But another thought terrified me even more. Mia. What would happen when she found out? Alyssa touched my arm. Alyssa: "Daniel." I looked at her. Alyssa: "I'm sorry." Daniel: "For what?" Alyssa: "For putting you in this situation." I shook my head. Daniel: "It's not just your responsibility." She looked at me. Alyssa: "You really believe me?" I frowned. Daniel: "Why wouldn't I?" She looked away. For a brief moment, something about her expression bothered me. But I pushed the feeling aside. I didn't want to question her. Not when she was carrying a child. Not when I believed it was mine. Days passed. I became distant from Mia. I stopped calling. I stopped replying quickly. I told myself I needed to handle everything first. But Mia didn't understand. From her perspective, I had suddenly changed after asking her to be my girlfriend. And she was right. One evening, she finally confronted me. She came to my apartment. I opened the door. She stood there with tears in her eyes. Mia: "Why are you avoiding me?" I stepped aside. Daniel: "Come in." She walked inside. Mia: "No." I looked at her. Mia: "I don't want to come in." Her voice broke. Mia: "I want an answer." I sighed. Daniel: "Mia..." Mia: "Are you going back to Alyssa?" I shook my head. Daniel: "No." Mia: "Then why are you acting like this?" I looked away. Daniel: "There's something you need to know." She waited. My heart was pounding. This was the moment. I could finally tell her. I could finally be honest. I took a deep breath. Daniel: "Alyssa is pregnant." Mia froze. Her eyes widened. For several seconds, she said nothing. Mia: "What?" Daniel: "She's pregnant." She stared at me. Mia: "With your baby?" I nodded. Daniel: "She says it's mine." Mia took a step backward. Her eyes filled with tears. Mia: "You knew?" Daniel: "I found out that night." Mia: "And you didn't tell me?" Daniel: "I didn't know how." She laughed bitterly. Mia: "You didn't know how?" Daniel: "I was scared." Mia: "You were scared?" She wiped her tears. Mia: "What about me?" I couldn't answer. She continued. Mia: "Did you ever think about how I would feel?" Daniel: "Of course I did." Mia: "Then why did you hide it?" I lowered my head. Daniel: "I didn't want to lose you." She stared at me. Mia: "You already were." The words broke something inside me. I stepped closer. Daniel: "Mia, I never wanted to hurt you." She shook her head. Mia: "But you did." Daniel: "I know." Mia: "And now you're going to choose her because she has your child." I shook my head. Daniel: "It's not like that." Mia: "Then what is it like?" I struggled to answer. Daniel: "I have a responsibility." She nodded slowly. Mia: "And where does that leave me?" I looked at her. Daniel: "I don't know." Her eyes filled with more tears. Mia: "That's all I needed to hear." She turned toward the door. I grabbed her wrist gently. Daniel: "Mia, please." She looked at my hand. Then at me. Mia: "Let go." I did. She opened the door. Before leaving, she looked back one last time. Mia: "I loved you before you even realized you loved me." My heart shattered. Mia: "But I won't compete with your past." She walked away. The door closed. I stood there alone. And for the first time, I realized I had lost her. Not because she stopped loving me. But because I had given her every reason to stop believing in me. Two weeks later, I barely heard from Mia. I tried calling. No answer. I sent messages. No response. I went to the coffee shop. She wasn't there. I asked Lucas if he knew where she was. He looked at me with disappointment. Lucas: "She doesn't want to talk to you." Daniel: "Did she say that?" Lucas: "She didn't have to." I looked away. Daniel: "I didn't know what else to do." He shook his head. Lucas: "You could have been honest." I sighed. Daniel: "I was scared." Lucas: "You're always scared." I looked at him. Lucas: "And while you're busy being scared, you're hurting everyone around you." His words stayed with me. Meanwhile, Mia was trying to move on. She stopped going to their usual coffee shop. She stopped checking her phone. She stopped waiting for Daniel. She told herself she was done. But every night, she still cried. Because she didn't stop loving him. She simply stopped believing that loving him was enough. And then one evening... Someone new entered her life. A man who didn't know her history. A man who didn't know Daniel. A man who only knew one thing. That Mia was beautiful. And he wanted to know her. His name was Ethan. And Daniel had no idea that Ethan would eventually become the person who changed everything. Because while Daniel was trying to fix the consequences of his past... Mia was slowly learning how to live without him. But neither of them knew the biggest secret had not yet been revealed. The baby Alyssa claimed was Daniel's... Was about to become the biggest twist of their lives.
