Mia became part of my routine before I even realized it.
At first, it was just coffee.
Then came the conversations.
Then the late-night messages.
Then the random calls that lasted longer than they were supposed to.
Before I knew it, she had become the first person I looked for every morning.
And somehow, I didn't mind.
I actually liked it.
Maybe that was the problem.
I was starting to like her too much.
I walked into the coffee shop one Monday morning and immediately saw her sitting at our usual table.
She looked up from her phone and smiled.
Mia: "You're late."
I glanced at the clock.
Daniel: "I'm only five minutes late."
She pushed a cup toward me.
Mia: "Five minutes is still late."
I picked up the cup.
Daniel: "You brought my coffee?"
Mia: "Of course."
I smiled.
Daniel: "You remembered my order."
She shrugged.
Mia: "You order the same thing every day."
I took a sip.
It was perfect.
Exactly how I liked it.
Daniel: "You know, you're getting really good at this."
She raised an eyebrow.
Mia: "At what?"
Daniel: "Taking care of me."
She immediately looked away.
Mia: "Don't get used to it."
I smiled.
Daniel: "Too late."
She rolled her eyes, but I noticed the small smile she was trying to hide.
For some reason, seeing that smile made my morning better.
After work, we decided to walk around the city.
There wasn't really a plan.
We just walked.
Mia stopped whenever she saw something interesting.
A bookstore.
A small dessert shop.
A street musician.
A cute dog.
Everything seemed to catch her attention.
At one point, she suddenly grabbed my arm.
Mia: "Daniel!"
I looked at her.
Daniel: "What?"
She pointed across the street.
Mia: "Look!"
I followed her finger.
There was a small bookstore with a huge display of romance novels.
I laughed.
Daniel: "That's what you're excited about?"
She looked offended.
Mia: "What's wrong with romance novels?"
Daniel: "They're unrealistic."
She placed her hands on her hips.
Mia: "How are they unrealistic?"
Daniel: "People don't just meet and fall in love."
She stared at me.
Mia: "Maybe they do."
Daniel: "That's not how real life works."
She smiled.
Mia: "Maybe you're just bitter."
I laughed.
Daniel: "I'm realistic."
Mia: "You're bitter."
She walked inside the bookstore.
I followed her.
I wasn't interested in the books.
I was interested in her.
She walked between the shelves, looking at different titles.
Then she picked up a romance novel.
Mia: "Have you read this?"
I shook my head.
Daniel: "No."
Mia: "Why?"
Daniel: "I told you. Romance isn't realistic."
She looked at the book.
Then at me.
Mia: "Maybe you just haven't met the right person."
My smile disappeared for a moment.
I knew exactly what she meant.
Alyssa.
The right person.
The wrong person.
I wasn't even sure anymore.
Mia noticed my expression.
Mia: "Sorry."
Daniel: "It's okay."
She put the book back.
Mia: "Can I ask you something?"
Daniel: "Sure."
She hesitated.
Mia: "Why did you and your ex-break up?"
I looked away.
The question I had been avoiding had finally arrived.
Daniel: "It's complicated."
She smiled faintly.
Mia: "Everything is complicated."
I sighed.
Daniel: "She left."
Mia's expression softened.
Mia: "Why?"
I shook my head.
Daniel: "I don't really know."
Mia: "Do you still love her?"
I froze.
For a few seconds, I couldn't answer.
I could have lied.
I could have said no.
But something about Mia made lying feel wrong.
Daniel: "I don't think so."
She looked at me carefully.
Mia: "You don't think so?"
Daniel: "I mean... I used to."
Mia: "Used to?"
I nodded.
Daniel: "Yeah."
She looked down.
Mia: "Okay."
But I knew she wasn't completely convinced.
Neither was I.
That night, Mia called me.
It was almost one in the morning.
I answered immediately.
Daniel: "Hello?"
Her voice was quiet.
Mia: "Hi."
I sat up in bed.
Daniel: "What's wrong?"
Mia: "Nothing."
I smiled.
Daniel: "Mia."
She sighed.
Mia: "My parents are fighting again."
My smile disappeared.
Daniel: "Are you okay?"
Mia: "Yeah."
Daniel: "You don't sound okay."
She became quiet.
Then she whispered something that made my heart ache.
Mia: "Can you just stay on the phone with me?"
I didn't hesitate.
Daniel: "Of course."
For a while, neither of us spoke.
I simply listened to her breathing.
Eventually, she started talking.
She told me about her family.
Her childhood.
Her fears.
The things she wanted to accomplish.
The things she was afraid of losing.
I listened.
I didn't interrupt.
I didn't try to fix anything.
When she finally became quiet, I spoke.
Daniel: "You can talk to me whenever you need to."
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she laughed softly.
Mia: "You're different, Daniel."
I smiled.
Daniel: "How?"
Mia: "You don't try to fix everything."
I looked at the ceiling.
Daniel: "Sometimes people don't need someone to fix them."
I paused.
Daniel: "Sometimes they just need someone to stay."
The line became silent.
Then I heard her sniffle.
Mia: "Thank you for staying."
My chest tightened.
Daniel: "Anytime."
Mia: "Goodnight, Daniel."
Daniel: "Goodnight, Mia."
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
For the first time in months, I felt something I hadn't felt since Alyssa.
Not pain.
Not longing.
Something else.
Something warm.
Something dangerous.
I was beginning to care.
The next morning, Mia was waiting for me at the coffee shop.
She smiled when she saw me.
Mia: "Good morning."
Daniel: "Good morning."
She pushed a small paper bag toward me.
Daniel: "What's that?"
Mia: "Breakfast."
I looked inside.
A sandwich.
I smiled.
Daniel: "You bought me breakfast?"
She shrugged.
Mia: "You said you skipped breakfast yesterday."
I looked at her.
Daniel: "You remember?"
She looked at me as if the answer were obvious.
Mia: "Of course."
I smiled.
Daniel: "Thank you."
She took a sip of her coffee.
Mia: "Don't get emotional."
I laughed.
Daniel: "I'm not."
She looked at me.
Mia: "You look emotional."
Daniel: "I'm touched."
She laughed.
Mia: "You're dramatic."
I leaned back in my chair.
Daniel: "You like dramatic."
She smiled.
Mia: "Maybe."
There it was again.
That word.
Maybe.
Every time she said it, I wondered if she liked me.
And every time I wondered...
I realized I was beginning to like her too.
A few days later, Lucas invited us to a party.
I didn't want to go.
Mia didn't want to go.
But somehow, we both ended up there.
The house was crowded.
Music filled every room.
People were laughing and dancing.
Mia stayed close to me.
Someone offered her a drink.
She politely refused.
I laughed.
She looked at me.
Mia: "What?"
Daniel: "I've never seen someone look so offended by a drink."
She rolled her eyes.
Mia: "I'm responsible."
Daniel: "You're boring."
She smiled.
Mia: "You like boring."
I looked at her.
For a moment, everything around us disappeared.
It was just her.
Just me.
And that strange feeling growing between us.
I wanted to tell her something.
I didn't know what.
Maybe I liked being around her.
Maybe I was beginning to forget my past.
Maybe she was becoming important.
But before I could say anything, someone called my name.
Alyssa: "Daniel!"
My body froze.
I knew that voice.
Slowly, I turned around.
Alyssa stood across the room.
Eight months.
Eight months since I had last seen her.
And suddenly, all those months felt like nothing.
She looked almost exactly the same.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same way of looking at me.
Like she still knew every part of me.
She walked toward us.
Alyssa: "Hi, Daniel."
I couldn't speak.
Mia looked at me.
Then at Alyssa.
Mia: "Who is she?"
Alyssa smiled.
Alyssa: "I'm Alyssa."
She looked at me.
Alyssa: "His ex."
Mia's expression changed.
She slowly turned toward me.
Mia: "Your ex?"
I swallowed.
Daniel: "Yeah."
Alyssa looked at Mia.
Alyssa: "So you're the girl I've heard about."
Mia frowned.
Mia: "You've heard about me?"
Alyssa smiled.
Alyssa: "Daniel mentioned you."
I looked at Alyssa.
I had never mentioned Mia to her.
Not once.
Daniel: "Don't."
Alyssa looked at me innocently.
Alyssa: "What?"
Daniel: "You know what."
She smiled.
Alyssa: "I just wanted to say hello."
Mia looked between us.
I could see the doubt growing in her eyes.
She stepped slightly away from me.
Mia: "Daniel, can we talk?"
I nodded.
Daniel: "Of course."
We walked toward the quieter hallway.
Mia turned toward me.
Her expression was hurt.
Mia: "Why didn't you tell me she might be here?"
Daniel: "I didn't know."
Mia: "Do you still love her?"
The question hit me harder than I expected.
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to tell Mia that Alyssa was my past.
I wanted to tell her that she was the person I wanted now.
But the words wouldn't come.
I hesitated.
Mia noticed.
Her eyes filled with disappointment.
Mia: "I understand."
Daniel: "Mia..."
She shook her head.
Mia: "No. It's okay."
Daniel: "It isn't what you think."
She looked at me.
Mia: "Then what is it?"
I couldn't answer.
She gave me a sad smile.
Mia: "That's what I thought."
She turned around and walked away.
I watched her disappear into the crowd.
I wanted to follow her.
I wanted to explain.
But I didn't.
Then I felt someone standing beside me.
Alyssa.
She looked at me.
Alyssa: "She's different."
I stared at her.
Daniel: "What do you want?"
Alyssa's smile disappeared.
Alyssa: "I wanted to see you."
Daniel: "Why?"
She looked into my eyes.
Alyssa: "Because I miss you."
My heart stopped.
I should have walked away.
I should have told her it was over.
Instead...
I stood there.
Silent.
And that silence would eventually cost me the girl who was beginning to mean everything.
Because sometimes the first step toward betrayal isn't a kiss.
It's hesitation.
And that night...
I hesitated.
