The Past Comes Back

1589 Words
I barely slept that night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Mia walking away. Then I saw Alyssa. Two women. Two completely different feelings. One was my past. The other was becoming my future. And somehow, I was standing between them. My phone was on the table beside my bed. I picked it up. No message from Mia. I opened our conversation anyway. I typed something. Are you okay? I stared at the words. Then deleted them. I typed again. I'm sorry about tonight. Deleted. Again. Can we talk? Deleted. I finally locked my phone. Maybe she needed space. Or maybe I was simply afraid of hearing what she would say. The next morning, I went to the coffee shop. Mia wasn't there. I ordered my usual coffee and sat at our table. For the first time, the place felt different. The same chairs. The same tables. The same music playing softly in the background. But without her, it felt empty. I checked the door every few minutes. Nothing. Then my phone vibrated. Alyssa. Good morning. I stared at the message. Another one appeared. Can we talk? I should have ignored it. Instead, I replied. Where? Her answer came immediately. The park. 5 PM. I put my phone down. I didn't know why I agreed. Maybe I wanted answers. Maybe I wanted closure. Or maybe a part of me still wanted Alyssa. That thought scared me. At five, I arrived at the park. Alyssa was sitting on the bench where we used to spend our afternoons. She looked up when she saw me. Alyssa: "You came." I sat beside her. Daniel: "You asked me to." She smiled faintly. Alyssa: "You used to come here without me asking." I looked away. Daniel: "Things changed." She became quiet. For several seconds, neither of us spoke. Then she looked at me. Alyssa: "Do you hate me?" I shook my head. Daniel: "No." Alyssa: "Are you angry?" I thought about it. Daniel: "Sometimes." She nodded. Alyssa: "You have every right to be." I looked at her. Daniel: "Why did you leave?" She took a deep breath. Alyssa: "Because I was scared." Daniel: "Of what?" Alyssa: "Of loving you and losing myself." I frowned. Daniel: "You could have told me." Alyssa: "I know." Daniel: "Instead, you disappeared." Her eyes filled with tears. Alyssa: "I thought leaving would make things easier." Daniel: "It didn't." She looked at me. Alyssa: "I know." I looked down. Daniel: "I spent months trying to understand what I did wrong." She shook her head. Alyssa: "You didn't do anything." Daniel: "Then why did you leave?" She wiped a tear. Alyssa: "Because I was the problem." I didn't know what to say. For the first time, Alyssa wasn't blaming me. She was blaming herself. And somehow, that made everything more complicated. She reached for my hand. I didn't pull away. Alyssa: "I missed you." I looked at her. Daniel: "I missed you too." She smiled. Then she leaned her head against my shoulder. I stayed still. I knew I shouldn't. But for a moment... It felt like the old days. That evening, I went home with Alyssa's words stuck inside my head. I couldn't stop thinking about her. But I also couldn't stop thinking about Mia. I opened my phone. Still nothing. I finally typed a message. Can we talk tomorrow? I stared at it for a few seconds. Then sent it. The message was delivered. No reply. I waited. Five minutes. Ten. Thirty. Nothing. I put the phone down. Then it vibrated. My heart jumped. But it wasn't Mia. It was Alyssa. Thank you for today. I stared at the message. I didn't answer. I didn't know what I was doing anymore. The next day, Mia finally came to the coffee shop. I saw her the moment she walked through the door. My heart immediately started beating faster. She looked tired. Her hair was tied back. She wore a simple white blouse. She looked beautiful. But there was something different about her. She didn't smile when she saw me. I stood up. Daniel: "Mia." She stopped. Mia: "Hi." Her voice was cold. Daniel: "Can we talk?" She looked at the table. Mia: "Okay." She sat down. I sat across from her. For a few seconds, neither of us spoke. Finally, I broke the silence. Daniel: "I'm sorry." She looked at me. Mia: "For what?" Daniel: "For the party." She nodded. Mia: "Okay." Daniel: "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable." Mia: "You didn't." I frowned. Daniel: "Then what's wrong?" She looked at me. Mia: "I realized something." Daniel: "What?" Mia: "I like you." My heart skipped. But she continued. Mia: "And that's exactly why I need to be careful." I stared at her. Daniel: "What do you mean?" She took a deep breath. Mia: "I don't want to fall in love with someone who's still in love with someone else." I looked down. Daniel: "I'm trying to move on." Mia: "I know." Daniel: "I care about you." She smiled sadly. Mia: "I know." Daniel: "Then what's the problem?" She looked directly into my eyes. Mia: "You're not ready." I didn't answer. Because she was right. I thought she would walk away. Instead, she stayed. That was the first thing about Mia I never understood. She knew I was broken. She knew my heart was complicated. Yet she still gave me chances. She didn't demand that I forget Alyssa overnight. She didn't force me to choose. She simply waited. And somehow... That made me care about her even more. Weeks passed. Mia and I slowly became close again. We started going out after work. We watched movies. We ate together. We laughed again. I thought things were getting better. But Alyssa was still there. She continued messaging me. Sometimes it was harmless. Sometimes it wasn't. I miss you. Do you remember this place? I saw something that reminded me of you. Every message pulled me back. And I answered more often than I should have. I told myself it was harmless. I told myself we were only talking. But every secret conversation was another step away from Mia. And I knew it. One evening, Mia and I were sitting in my car. Rain was falling outside. She rested her head against the window. Mia: "Can I ask you something?" Daniel: "Sure." She looked at me. Mia: "Are you happy?" The question surprised me. Daniel: "With what?" Mia: "With me." I looked at her. Daniel: "Yes." She smiled. Mia: "Really?" Daniel: "Really." She looked down. Mia: "Then why do I still feel like there's someone between us?" I didn't know what to say. My phone vibrated. I glanced at it. Alyssa. Mia noticed. Her smile disappeared. Mia: "It's her again." I locked the phone. Daniel: "It's nothing." She stared at me. Mia: "Then why are you hiding it?" Daniel: "I'm not hiding anything." Mia: "Daniel." Her voice was calm. Too calm. Mia: "I'm not stupid." I sighed. Daniel: "We're just talking." Her eyes became glassy. Mia: "Do you talk to her every day?" I hesitated. She noticed. Mia: "You do." Daniel: "Sometimes." She looked out the window. Mia: "Why?" Daniel: "I don't know." She laughed sadly. Mia: "That's always your answer." I reached for her hand. She moved away. Daniel: "Mia." Mia: "I need you to decide what you want." Daniel: "I want you." She looked at me. Mia: "Then stop giving pieces of yourself to her." Her words stayed with me. A week later, I finally made a decision. I asked Mia to meet me at the same restaurant where we'd had our first real dinner together. She arrived wearing a simple blue dress. I stood when she approached. Mia: "What's this?" I smiled. Daniel: "Sit down." She sat. I took a deep breath. Daniel: "I've been thinking." She looked nervous. Mia: "About what?" Daniel: "About us." Her eyes softened. Daniel: "I know I'm not perfect." She smiled faintly. Mia: "That's an understatement." I laughed. Daniel: "I know." Then I became serious. Daniel: "But I don't want to keep pretending that what we have is just friendship." She stared at me. Mia: "What are you saying?" I reached across the table. Daniel: "I'm saying I want you." Her eyes filled with tears. Daniel: "I don't know what the future looks like." I squeezed her hand. Daniel: "But I want to find out with you." She smiled. Mia: "Are you sure?" I nodded. Daniel: "Yes." She looked at me for a long moment. Then she whispered, Mia: "Okay." I smiled. Daniel: "Okay?" She laughed through her tears. Mia: "Okay." I held her hand. For the first time, I thought maybe I was finally moving forward. Maybe Alyssa really was my past. Maybe Mia was my future. But I didn't know that the past wasn't finished with me yet. Because later that night... my phone rang. Alyssa. I stared at the screen. Mia was sitting beside me. I should have ignored it. I should have ended everything. Instead, I answered. Daniel: "Hello?" There was silence. Then Alyssa's voice came through. Alyssa: "I need to see you." I looked at Mia. She smiled at me, completely unaware of what was about to happen. I swallowed. Daniel: "Why?" Alyssa's voice trembled. Alyssa: "Because I'm pregnant." Everything inside me stopped. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. I couldn't even speak. Mia looked at me. Mia: "Daniel?" I stared at the phone. Alyssa was still waiting. And in that single moment... My entire future changed.
