The air between them was suddenly heavy.
Amelia stood by the open car door, her hand resting on the handle, eyes narrowed at Nathaniel. Her question had hung in the air like a challenge, and now he had no choice but to answer.
"Did you spend money on me without telling me?" She asked again
Nathaniel’s mind raced. The system’s warning rang in his head like a siren:
> “Affection Drop Incoming if You Lie.”
He swallowed hard. He hated being vulnerable. Hated explaining himself. But for some reason, this time, he didn’t want to lose her.
“Yes,” he said quietly. “I did.”
Her lips parted slightly. Shock. Confusion.
“For what?” she asked, voice softer now.
He looked away, jaw clenching. “Because I wanted to give you something and I knew you would refuse it if it came with my name on it.”
“You don’t even know me.”
“I’m beginning to,” he said, meeting her eyes. “You don’t fake smiles. You don’t worship money. You walk into places and don’t shrink. That’s rare.”
Amelia stared at him, her heart doing somersaults she didn’t ask for. Her emotions were a mess, anger, curiosity, maybe a flicker of flattery?
But then came the more important question.
“Why me, Nathaniel?”
He inhaled deeply. He couldn’t tell her about the system. Not yet.
So he gave her part of the truth.
“I got used to people wanting my money,” he said. “You didn’t.”
“That’s not a reason.”
“It’s enough for me.”
They stood in silence for a long beat, the city’s lights casting shadows on the pavement.
Eventually, she stepped into the car. He followed.
In The Car, they were silence again
Amelia glanced out the window, biting her lip. She hated how fast her heart was beating. Hated that his words echoed in her mind long after he spoke them.
Was he always this intense?
Or was it just with her?
Nathaniel sat beside her, calm on the outside, but inside his system kept pinging with updates.
> Affection: 38/100 – Trust Sparked
> Temporary Stability Mode Activated: No Drop For 24 Hours
> New Task: Trigger Jealousy.
> Bring another woman close. Amelia must witness it.
He gritted his teeth.
Jealousy?
That felt dirty. Manipulative. But the rewards…
> Tenfold rebate: $2 Million
> Unlocked Skill: Seduction Boost + Public Control Aura
Nathaniel leaned his head back and closed his eyes.
The system wanted him to play games.
And so far, the system had never lost.
The Next Morning in Amelia’s World
Amelia woke up and stared at the ceiling for too long.
She couldn’t understand why Nathaniel haunted her thoughts. One dinner and one confession shouldn’t have had this much effect.
But it wasn’t about the gifts or the restaurant. It was the way he looked at her. Like he saw things no one else did.
Still, she reminded herself not to get carried away. He was a billionaire. She was a florist barely paying rent. She had no business catching feelings for someone like him.
She got up, dressed quickly, and decided to clear her head with a walk and a visit to her favorite bookstore.
Books never judged. Books never confused her.
At the Bookstore
She walked into the familiar scent of paper and wood polish. The place was quiet and cozy.
She smiled for the first time that day until she turned the corner and froze.
Nathaniel was there.
With another woman.
Tall. Slim. Stunning. Laughing too loudly. Her hand brushed against his suit sleeve like she belonged there.
Amelia’s heart sank.
He moved on already? Or was this the real him all along?
Nathaniel hadn’t seen her yet. His attention was on the woman, a practiced smile on his face. One she hadn’t seen during their dinner.
Amelia turned quickly and stepped out of the aisle, pretending to browse the nearest shelf. Her fingers shook as they ran over the spines of unread books.
She didn’t want to admit it, but it hurt. Deeply.
She had let herself believe he saw her differently.
Inside Nathaniel’s Mind
> System Alert: Jealousy Triggered
> Amelia’s Affection Drop Prevented (Stability Mode).
> Task Complete.
> Rewards Transferred: $2 Million + Skill Boost Active.
Nathaniel wasn’t smiling for the woman beside him. He was watching Amelia from the corner of his eye, noting every flicker of emotion she tried to hide.
The system whispered to him:
> She’s invested. Your next move will determine the bond.
Nathaniel’s chest tightened.
He didn’t enjoy seeing her like this. But the system had a path, and he was too deep now to pull out.
Still, as he watched her leave the store without saying a word, something shifted inside him ( a whisper of regret).
Was it worth it?
Later That Night in Amelia’s Room
She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling again. This time, tears welled in her eyes.
She felt stupid.
She barely knew him. Why was she this affected?
But deep down, she knew it wasn’t about just h
im.
It was about being chosen then pushed aside.
Seen and then made to feel invisible again.
Was she falling for someone who was only using her?
