Small Cabin

942 Words
Audrey POV I woke up when Lulu started to cry for a bottle. Danny is sitting on the other side of the car seat. She hasn’t spoken since she woke up. She just stares out the window. We stopped for a while at a grocery store and Dom bought some food. I assume we have plenty of stuff to make sandwiches now.  Dom had turned off the highway and we are now driving down a very bumpy dirt road. It is hard to hold the bottle in Lulu’s mouth. Dom and Casper are also quiet. Dom keeps giving Casper a strange look.  We turn onto an even smaller dirt road and come to a stop in front of a cabin. It looks small and old. There is only a small clearing in the forest around the cabin. Casper gets out and opens Danny’s door. He helps her out and reaches for Lulu’s car seat. Dom opens my door and helps me get out. Dom goes into the back of the van and starts unpacking our stuff.  I follow Casper inside the cabin. It is extremely dusty here. There is a fireplace. In front of that is a flower printed couch. There is a brown loveseat on the opposite side of it. There is a very small kitchen with a fridge and stove. There is a small counter next to a sink.  There are two doors on both sides of the cabin. One door leads to a bedroom with a full sized bed. The other one has a slightly larger bed. There is a bathroom in this room. The bathroom is just a shower, toilet and sink. Nothing else seems to fit in here.  We spend most of the day unpacking and cleaning. Danny and I are sharing a room with the larger bed. Casper said that he cannot sleep in a small bedroom and wants to sleep on the couch. So Dom has the other bedroom. Casper cooked dinner and I did my best to help. He made us spaghetti. I could not be happier. I was afraid to have more sandwiches. We sat on the couch to eat. Danny went out with Dom to collect wood earlier. So the fire is nice and warm now. Danny stood up to go to the bedroom. “You're already going to sleep?” Dom asked.  “Yes, aren't we training tomorrow?” Danny asked  “Is that what you want?” Dom scanned her bruised body. “If he finds me. I want to be able to defend myself.” She replied “Okay, we go out at dawn. Sleep well.” Dom said I help Casper clean up after dinner. I like to be around Casper. He makes me feel safe. I was able to sleep but I woke up from a nightmare. I sneak out of my bedroom. The fire has died. The room is dark. Casper is asleep on the couch. His legs don’t fully fit so they hang a little off. I walk over to him and fidget with my bear. His eyes fly open and he takes a deep breath. I think I scared him. He takes a moment trying to sense what is around him. “Audrey?” He asked.  “I had a bad dream.” I whispered softly.  He sits up and reaches for me. He taps the air before finding my arm. He pulls me into a hug. “What was the dream about?” He asked.  “I don’t know. I don’t always remember the dreams. I just know it is bad.” I whispered. He pulls me onto his lap and rubs my back.  “It is just a dream honey.” He kisses the top of my head.  “That is what Danny said before our pack died…..It was my fault. I couldn’t remember that dream and they all died. I could have saved them.” I started to cry. Casper feels a tear hit his arm and he pulls away. His hand feels for my face. He rubs his thumbs over my cheeks. “You think you dreamt of the attack before it happened?” I nod with his hands still on my face. He stays quiet for a moment. “Audrey, how often do you see things like that?” “I dream about a lot of stuff. Sometimes I remember the dreams. Sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I hear voices whisper things to me. They tell me stuff. Like a man told me about you. He said we needed you. So I had Dom save you.” I explain “Nothing is your fault. You are young. Your eyes are still developing. As you grow up you will remember more. You will see more.” He kisses my forehead. “If the mood goddess wanted you to help them then you would have remembered the dream. Everything happens for a reason. What happened to your pack was meant to happen.” “You know a lot about what I can do?”  “I do. I need you to promise me something.” “What?” I ask “Do not tell anyone else about your dreams. It can be dangerous. Promise me you will keep it a secret.”  “I promise” I say as I nod my head.  He smiles. “Do you want some hot chocolate?” He sets me down on the couch and fumbles around the kitchen to make hot chocolate. I snuggled into his side. Casper draped a blanket over me. I drank my hot chocolate and talked until my eyes grew heavy.
