Diana 's POV
The rays of sunlight that passed through the curtain hit my face and my eyes fluttered open. My eyes caught the unfamiliar ceiling and I tried to remember what happened the previous night.
I could feel a heavy weight on my body and I turned. His handsome face came into my view, and I smiled. Being with Zane last night was wonderful, I had expected it to be full of regrets but I don't regret anything.
If only he would turn out to be my mate, everything would turn out fine. If he didn't, it would be really sad that I would have to let go of this beauty.
I turned to the other side to check my phone. I turned it on, and 47 missed calls and 20 text messages, all from Aunt Dora. I sighed. At least I did enjoy myself a lot.
My eyes went to the time, it was past 9 am. Oh s**t. No wonder she called so much. The ceremony was supposed to begin at 10 am.
"Zane..." I called softly. "Zane..." I tapped his arm.
"That's not how you wake a man up." He groaned groggily. "you use a kiss or something else. Don't just-"
I kissed him instantly. "Are you awake now?"
He chuckled. "Yes, baby."
The way he called me baby, caused my heart to flutter and I smiled a little.
"I have to get going," I said. "The ceremony will begin in an hour, I'm sure my aunt will be walking and yelling down the streets of Mexico in search of me."
He smiled, stretching his stiff muscles. "I feel so bad that you have to leave me now."
"Well, we can still go on that date by the weekend," I said. And hopefully, you turn out to be my mate, that way I could directly move in with you without being bothered about being called a cheat.
He smiled. "Of course darling. Do you need me to drop you off?"
"Nah, I can manage," I said. He nodded. He turned and reached into his drawer, pulled out a bundle of dollar bills, and handed them to me. I went silent, wondering what it was for. Looking at it, it looked like it was up to a thousand dollars.
"Zane... What's it for?" I asked. Somewhere my heart began to drum in my chest. Why would he give me such an amount of money just because I spent the night with him?
"Just take it." He urged. "Use it, get something nice for yourself. Maybe a beautiful dress for the mating ceremony."
I blushed. "I can't take it, Zane. I don't need it."
"You have to. I won't let you go if you don't take it." He said.
I had a bad feeling about taking the money but I didn't just know how to reject it. Maybe I will collect it and I won't spend it. If anything happens, I could easily return it to him.
"Zane..." I began. He put his finger to my lips, shushing me instantly.
"Please." He begged. "Take it before you leave."
Sighing in defeat, I reached out and took the money from him.
"Thank you."
"Last night was wonderful and I hope we can do more." He said. "For now, let's get this ceremony over and done with. Then we can plan our future."
I smiled. "I like the sound of that."
"Mmh, I know you do." He pulled me closer and pecked my lips softly. "You should dress up and get going if you must make it in time."
I listened to him. Quickly, I dressed up and left the apartment.
I found my way to my aunt's house and I met her pacing in front of the house.
"Aunt Dora, I'm not missing," I started as I arrived. I walked passed her and entered the house. She followed me, hot on my tail.
"Diana , where the hell did you go?" She demanded.
"Aunt, if you want me to prepare in time, you should allow me to dress up quickly. You can scold me when we return home."
Dora growled but she allowed me to do what I wanted. I could hear the sound of her stomping away. I quickly had my bath and I dressed up.
I wore a dress that had no sleeves until it got to the elbow. The dress hugged my body from up to my thigh, then it flared out. It had a slit from the point where the flair began, right in front of my left leg. The dress was a royal purple dress and it had gold rims.
I matched it with my pair of gold-heeled boots.
I curled my long hair and packed it in a high bun, leaving a few strands to grace my face.
When I emerged, my aunt was surprised, she forgot about her earlier anger.
"Good thing you look so beautiful. I would have thundered at you." She said, "Get in the car, let's move."
She drove us to the pack house. I could see different flavors of women there. Some seemed to be as old as my mother yet they were still in search of their mates.
Some girls dressed decently, some dressed slutty, while some were in between, just like me.
"Now we just have to wait till it gets to your turn," Dora said. I nodded, sitting still.
Some girls had gone before me when the ceremony started. About fifteen girls had gone, and thirteen found their mates and were happy. One got rejected by her mate and I didn't blame him. If I were him, I would do the same.
One didn't find her mate at all. She returned, feeling dejected.
I was among the next set of girls that were called out. We were covered with veils while the men would come and sniff at us one after the other.
I heard some cheers and I saw two girls leave the group. I began to sniff something different. It smelled familiar. I could sense him walking closer to me. How did I know it was him?
He came and stood before me and I saw his hand grab mine. I felt the same spark I felt last night with Zane.
It can't be.
When he brought me out, there were cheers and claps and I could distinguish Dora's cheers from the crowd. I smiled.
I watched his hand come up and grab the hem of my veil, he raised it up and over my head. Our eyes met.
It turned out to be him. Why did my heart not feel elated? Perhaps because the scowl on his face was entirely different from the warm smiles I received last night.
The next words I heard sounded like someone took a knife and stabbed my chest.
"I reject her."
