Chapter 14

1050 Words
The concrete floor of the Black Bay terminal vibrated violently beneath Clara's boots. The storm outside had escalated into a savage downpour, the heavy drops slamming against the rusted corrugated iron roof like a rapid, rhythmic march of war drums. The noise echoed through the hollow warehouse, slicing through the heavy, suffocating silence that hung between the two factions. High-intensity halogen lamps from Julian Vance’s luxury black SUVs cast long, predatory shadows across the floor, painting the armed guards in sharp, terrifying silhouettes against the darkness. Julian stood directly behind her mother’s heavy iron chair, his fingers casually turning his silver pocket watch over and over in his palm. The rhythmic ticking was entirely lost to the storm, but the malicious gleam in his amber eyes was clear. "The clock is officially running out, Alec," Julian purred, a lazy, sadistic smirk plastered across his face. "Give my men the master encryption key, or watch your beautiful bride pay for the crime she’s spent five long years running from." Clara didn't dare to move, but her fingers, completely hidden within the deep folds of the oversized wool coat Alec had thrown over her shoulders, tightened around the small plastic tracker shell. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She slid her thumb to the edge of the device, finding the hidden toggle. One click. The device emitted a silent, encrypted pulse through the localized network. Alec stood a single step in front of her, his towering six-foot-two frame an impenetrable barrier shielding her from the raised weapon barrels. His broad shoulders were perfectly square, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute, icy stone. He didn't look back at her, but his right hand resting inside his tailored jacket was locked securely around his weapon. "You always did talk too much, Julian," Alec said, his deep baritone flat, smooth, and completely devoid of fear. "You think you control this grid because you bought off a few mid-level financial consultants. But you forgot who laid the foundation of this city's network." Julian’s eyes narrowed, his lazy patience evaporating in a split second. He waved his hand sharply to signal his front line of guards. "Kill him. Secure the girl." Before a single guard could pull their trigger, the main electrical breaker box at the rear of the terminal erupted in a violent, cascading shower of brilliant blue sparks. The high-voltage explosion instantly shattered the high-intensity halogen bulbs, plunging the entire cavernous facility into an absolute, pitch-black darkness. "Shoot them! Light it up!" Julian’s voice cracked with a sudden, frantic panic through the dark. A metallic, deafening shriek ripped through the room as an armored tactical transport vehicle rammed straight through the side service doors, its reinforced steel bumper throwing concrete bricks and drywall into the air. Flashbang grenades launched from its roof rack, detonating across the concrete floor in a blinding sequence of white light and concussive roars. Within three seconds, the warehouse filled with a thick, choking cloud of acrid white smoke. "Clara, drop!" Alec’s voice roared beside her. His large hand instantly seized her waist, yanking her completely off her feet as he lunged over the heavy steel frame of a parked forklift. A split second later, a hail of automatic gunfire tore through the iron frames above them, showering their shoulders in sharp, burning sparks. Alec raised his weapon from behind the steel casing, firing three precise, deafening rounds into the glare of the flashbangs. Clara heard two heavy thuds as the nearest guards dropped to the floor before they could line up a shot. Clara coughed violently through the acrid smoke, her chest heaving as her vision blurred from the tear gas. "My mother! Alec, they have my mother!" "I’m not leaving her," Alec growled near her ear, his breath hot against her skin. He broke cover, moving through the thick haze like a apex predator born to the shadows. With one swift, smooth motion, his tactical blade sliced through the thick ropes binding Evelyn Hastings to the iron chair. He hoisted the older woman over his broad shoulder, turning back to grab Clara’s wrist in a crushing, unyielding grip. They sprinted through the flying plaster and wood splinters toward the open rear doors of the idling armored transport. Suppression rounds from Alec’s rescue team pinged aggressively against the iron sheets, keeping Julian’s remaining men pinned behind the shipping crates. Alec threw Evelyn onto the custom leather interior before hoisting Clara up by her waist. A stray round clipped the heavy steel door frame inches from Clara’s face, fracturing the thick glass panel. Alec scrambled into the vehicle behind her, slamming the reinforced steel door shut with a heavy, definitive echo that cut off the sounds of the warehouse battle. The driver immediately slammed the vehicle into reverse, the massive tires spinning violently in the mud as they tore out of the terminal and into the stormy night. Clara collapsed against the leather seats, her hands covered in soot, her heart fracturing as the newly restored memories of the harbor crash five years ago clawed at her sanity. She looked up at Alec, who was already clearing his weapon, a dark line of blood running down his sharp jaw from a stray shard of glass. "The extraction was clean," Alec said, his stormy gray eyes locking onto her pale face with an intense, burning focus that made her breath catch. He leaned forward, his large, warm hands framing her face, his thumbs wiping away the damp mountain rain and soot from her cheeks. "But Julian’s inside asset just activated the secondary protocol. The central police network just broadcast an emergency alert. We officially want fugitives for corporate sabotage and kidnapping. By morning, the entire city will be a trap." Clara stared into his eyes, her voice shaking violently. "Alec... the car five years ago... I remember my hands on the wheel. I remember Arthur screaming. It was me. I ran your brother off that cliff." Alec’s grip on her jaw tightened just enough to anchor her, his expression softening with a rare, raw intensity. "Hold on, Clara. Don't let the fog take your mind back to that night. We are going to a safe house. And tonight, we find out who actually cut those brake lines."
