The fog rolling off the black water of the harbor was thick, smelling of salt and rusted iron. It was 11:30 PM.
The heavy luxury SUV sat completely dark, parked behind a row of crumbling, abandoned shipping containers at the edge of the old Hastings dockyard.
Inside, the only light came from the dim blue glow of a specialized tactical tablet resting on Alec’s lap. Clara sat beside him in the passenger seat, her breath fogging up the window. She had traded her black corporate dress for dark, practical clothes, but her hands were still freezing.
"Movement by the main terminal entrance," Alec’s deep baritone cut through the quiet of the car. He zoomed in on a thermal security feed.
A single figure carrying a heavy duffel bag had just cut the chain-link lock on the abandoned warehouse doors.
"It’s Marcus. He’s right on schedule."
Clara watched the thermal outline of the man she had trusted her entire life slide into the building. A cold knot of anger twisted in her gut. "What do we do now?"
Alec turned off the tablet, plunged the vehicle into absolute darkness, and turned to look at her. In the shadows of the car, his gray eyes looked like shattered flint. He reached over, his large hand closing over her trembling fingers. His touch was warm, solid, and completely grounding.
"We go in, we record him opening the secure safe, and we secure his digital device while it’s actively connected to Julian Vance’s server," Alec explained, his fingers tightening reassurance around hers.
"My extraction team is waiting fifty meters out. You stay behind me at all times, Clara. Do you understand?"
Clara nodded, her jaw setting with defiance. "I want to look him in the eye when he realizes he lost."
They slipped out of the vehicle, moving like ghosts through the swirling fog. The side door of the massive, corrugated iron warehouse creaked open, allowing them to step inside. The air was heavy with dust, dry rot, and the memories of Clara’s childhood. This place had once been the beating heart of her father’s logistics empire. Now, it was just a graveyard.
Flashlight beams flickered from the elevated foreman's office at the back of the warehouse.
Alec led the way, his steps completely silent on the concrete floor, his body naturally positioning itself to shield Clara from any line of sight. They climbed the metal stairs to the office, slipping through the shadows until they could see inside the glass-walled room.
Marcus Vance was on his knees behind the rusted metal desk. He had pulled back the rotting carpet, revealing the heavy iron floor safe beneath. He was typing a sequence into a digital hacking rig, his breathing heavy with greed.
Beep. Beep. Click.
The heavy bolts of the safe retracted. Marcus let out a sharp, trembling laugh of pure triumph as he swung the heavy door open, reaching inside to pull out the black external hard drive that Alec’s tech team had planted there just three hours ago.
"Looking for this, Uncle Marcus?"
Clara stepped out of the shadows, her voice cutting through the hollow warehouse like a gunshot.
Marcus violently flinched, dropping the hard drive back into the safe as he scrambled to his feet. His flashlight beam flew across the room, blinding Clara for a second before Alec stepped directly in front of the light, his towering six-foot-two frame casting a massive, terrifying shadow over the older man.
"S-Sinclair?" Marcus stammered, his face turning an ash-gray color as he looked from Alec to Clara. His wire-rimmed glasses slipped down his nose. "Clara... what is the meaning of this? Why are you here with him?"
"The game is over, Marcus," Alec said, his voice flat, dangerously calm, and dripping with absolute finality. He held up his phone, showing a live data stream.
"The hacking rig you just plugged into that safe didn't download a ledger. It uploaded a tracker directly into your private encrypted network. My legal team is currently freezing every single shell corporation you registered under Julian Vance's funding."
Marcus’s grandfatherly facade disintegrated instantly. His features twisted into a mask of pure, ugly malice. He sneered at Clara, spitting on the floor.
"You pathetic little brat. You chose him? After everything his family did to squeeze your father out of the market?"
"My father trusted you!" Clara flared, stepping around Alec, her eyes blazing with a fierce, protective rage. "You framed him for a fifty-million-dollar theft! You let him rot in a cell while you took Julian Vance’s blood money!"
"Your father was a fool, Clara!" Marcus hissed, backing up against the window of the office as he realized he was trapped.
"He wanted to run a clean business in a dirty city! Julian offered me more money in a single wire transfer than your father paid me in a decade. I did what I had to do to survive!"
"And so did I," Alec countered smoothly, stepping forward to seize Marcus’s phone and digital rig from the desk, locking down the evidence.
"Security, move in for the extraction."
But before Alec could finish the command into his earpiece, the heavy metal doors of the main warehouse below slammed open with a deafening, echoing boom.
The bright, blinding headlights of three luxury black SUVs pierced the darkness of the warehouse, illuminating the dust motes in the air. The engines roared as the vehicles circled the center floor, trapping Alec’s security team outside the perimeter.
From the lead SUV, a tall figure stepped out, clapping his hands slowly in the darkness.
It was Julian Vance.
"Bravo, Alec. Truly, brilliant work," Julian’s mocking, arrogant voice echoed up into the rafters of the foreman's office. He walked to the bottom of the metal stairs, flanked by four heavily armed private security guards. He looked up, his amber eyes locking onto Clara with a dangerous, obsessive gleam.
"But did you really think I’d let my best asset carry out a midnight errand without keeping an eye on him?"
Marcus let out a sigh of relief, instantly moving toward the door.
"Julian! Thank God. They set a trap, they have the data keys—"
"Shut up, Marcus," Julian snapped coldly without looking at him. He kept his eyes fixed entirely on Clara.
"Clara, darling... I told you the Sinclair cage was too cold. Come down those stairs, bring me that hard drive, and I promise your father will walk out of custody by sunrise. Stay up there with Alec, and I'll make sure neither of you leaves this dockyard alive."
Clara’s heart stopped, her breath catching in her throat as she looked at the armed guards below. They were completely outnumbered.
Before she could panic, Alec’s hand gripped her arm, pulling her completely behind his back, his body acting as an impenetrable wall between her and the threat below. He reached down into his coat jacket, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that sent a thrill of pure adrenaline straight through her veins.
"I told you last night, Julian," Alec growled down at his rival, his grip on Clara’s waist tightening protectively.
"Touch my wife, and I burn your world to the ground. You aren't leaving this warehouse with the data. And you sure as hell aren't leaving with her."
