Chapter14:Secrets Beneath the Surface

652 Words
Austin sat alone in his office long after midnight, lamp throwing hard shadows across files and receipts. Illicit shipments, coded transfers, offshore accounts—the pieces painted a picture he couldn’t unsee. His parents had built their empire on more than ambition. They’d built it on blood and silence. Selene was safe for now, hidden far away with the cash he’d given her. But every hour she was out there alone felt like borrowed time. The wedding illusion had to hold—rehearsal tomorrow, ceremony soon—while he dug for the truth that would free them both. A knock. Adam stepped in, cautious. “Boss… it’s late. You sure about doing this solo?” Austin didn’t look up. “If I don’t connect these dots, Selene stays a target.” Adam hesitated. “Office gossip’s getting louder. Supply chain ‘disappearances.’ Staff shaken, some gone for good. Your parents don’t just fire—they intimidate.” Austin’s jaw tightened. “Names. Dates. Anything solid.” “I’ll get what I can. But Diana’s asking questions. She’s… different lately. Softer. Watching you closer.” Austin exhaled. “I’ve noticed.” Morning brought penthouse chaos—florists placing arrangements, caterers sampling sauces, Diana directing with quiet command. She moved near him more often now—hand brushing his arm, gaze lingering. Once, her dress strap slipped as she leaned over a seating chart; she didn’t rush to fix it. Austin kept distance, professional. “Schedule’s locked. No changes.” She stepped closer, voice low. “You’re tense. Wedding nerves?” “Focus on the details.” Her fingers grazed his sleeve. “Or something else.” She sat lightly on the edge of his desk, knee brushing his thigh. “I’ve been thinking… about you. How you protect what matters.” He met her eyes—wary. “We’re doing this for the families.” “I know.” Her tone softened. “But watching you… it’s changing how I see things.” Austin’s pulse kicked. This wasn't Diana who’d ordered chains. This was something new—and far more dangerous. Hope you’re not forgetting dinner today, with everyone?” Diana said from where she was sitting “Oh, I almost forgot,” he replied reluctantly. Evening arrived. Quay glowed gold over the harbour. Family dinner—strategic, polished, every smile calculated. His parents sat at the window table, Diana’s family chatting lightly. Austin slid in beside Diana. His mother raised a glass. “To the future.” Glasses clinked. Austin didn’t drink. His father leaned in quietly. “You’ve been asking questions.” Austin met his eyes. “Shouldn’t I?” Richard smiled thinly. “Careful, son. Some truths cost more than you can pay.” Eleanor added softly, “We protect what’s ours. Always have.” Austin’s voice stayed low. “Even if it means erasing people?” Silence. His father’s gaze hardened. “You think tonight is restraint? Wait until we stop holding back.” Diana’s hand brushed his under the table—warning or comfort, he couldn’t tell. Conversation shifted to polite surface—travel stories, wedding details, toasts to “elegant futures.” Austin responded when needed, observed everything: every glance, every careful word. The mains came—delicate seafood, rich sauces. The harbour view shimmered cinematic through tall windows. Diana leaned closer. “You’re quiet tonight.” “Taking it in.” She smiled faintly. “You do seem… thoughtful.” His mother nodded approvingly. “Quay is perfect. Classic. Memorable.” Austin didn’t answer. He wasn’t thinking about memorable nights. He was thinking about the cost of the deals that had bought them. Dinner ended. Cool Sydney air brushed them as they left. His mother smiled. “One day you’ll look back with pride.” Austin walked to the car in silence. He didn’t need to reply. Pride wasn’t what he felt. It was a strategy.
