The realization dawned on me, knocking air from my lungs and leaving me breathless.
Gasping, I shut the book and hugged it to my chest, as if that might steady the whirlwind of emotions threatening to consume me. Slowly, my hands traveled to my stomach, cradling the precious little life growing in me.
Footsteps inched toward the room and I closed the book. Lurching to my feet, I returned it to the shelf and hurried out of the room. The footsteps belonged to a guard patrolling the place.
Quickly, I hurried down the corridors, up the fleet of stairs to my bedroom. I shut the door after me and climbed into my bed.
