Chapter 7: Midnight Call

259 Words
3:17am. My phone buzzed on the nightstand. Unknown number. I almost ignored it. Then it buzzed again. And again. "Hello?" My voice was sleep-rough. Static. Then breathing. "Adriana." Damian. Drunk. "Are you okay?" I sat up. A bitter laugh. "No. Are you happy now?" "Damian, where are you?" "My office. Alone. Stock's down. Board wants me gone. And it's your fault." "Is it?" I whispered. "Or is it because you threw away the one person who actually loved you?" Silence. Then: "I didn't mean it. 5 years ago. Any of it." My chest hurt. "Then why did you say it?" "Because I was scared," he said. Voice cracking. "Scared that if I kept you, I'd ruin you. Like I ruin everything." Tears burned my eyes. The same speech. Different night. "Don't do this, Damian. Don't call me at 3am and make me feel sorry for you." "I’m not asking for sorry," he said. "I’m asking... can I see you? Just once. Without the cameras. Without the war." My heart and my brain were at war. The girl he broke said no. The CEO said no. But the woman who still remembered his hands said... "I’ll think about it." "That’s a yes," he said quickly. Like a drowning man grabbing air. "That’s a maybe," I corrected. "Don’t ruin it." He hung up. I stared at the ceiling for an hour. The man who destroyed me was broken. And God help me, I wanted to be the one to put him back together. Or destroy him completely. I hadn’t decided yet.
