"Lena," he caressed my cheek as my heart dropped and broke into a million pieces at the nickname he gave me. For a few seconds, I saw my father in his eyes, "promise me you will take care of yourself," he told me, and that was enough to show me the reason for his fear. For the first time, I actually felt like he cared. For the first time, he called me something other than Elena. "As soon as I leave you right now, you go hide next to the door and right when they walk in, I will draw them deeper inside. As soon as they are far from the door, run. Hide. Don't let anyone find you."
"I won't leave you here alone, Huncho!" I sobbed.
"Elena!" He groaned, "listen. To. Me." He nodded, wanting to hear me agree to his plan, "promise me."
I nodded, but he pressed harder, "promise. Me."
"I will." I agreed through the banging that was getting louder and louder syncing with my heartbeats. We share one last eye contact as a form of goodbye, and I wished I was able just to pause this whole scene for one second and appreciate it just a little longer. I wanted to hug him, kiss him, tell him that I will miss him and be safe. I wanted to be vulnerable just like he was a few seconds ago. But we both knew we didn't have time.
"Go!" He yelled, pushing me towards the door before following me to it. I hid where he told me to, then he opened the door and quickly moved to the end of the room. Not so long after, men barged in, moving closer and closer to Huncho as he walked to the back with his face facing them.
"You fell, Huncho. This is your end!" Fox pointed a gun at Huncho's head after loading it but seeing its laser on his forehead angered me. I could hear my own heavy breath. I knew that Huncho was waiting for me to leave so he could start defending himself, but I refused to give up and run away. And before realizing what I was doing, I moved closer to him and pointed the gun blindly at Fox, then fired. But the gun between my hands wasn't the only one that fired.
Fox turned for a split second, searching for whoever aimed at him, allowing Huncho to snatch the gun pointed at him. Without any hesitation, he fired.
Fox yelled in pain, falling to the ground. Huncho hovered over him and pointed his gun at his head. "Tell me now who fell, Fox," He pulled the trigger.
"Huncho!" I yelled, stealing his attention. He knew what I wanted when I gave him pleading eyes. He clenched his jaw, thinking if he should listen to me or not. He looked back at him, his gun still pointing at Fox and my heart was begging to jump out of my chest, run to where Huncho was and snatch the gun out of his hand. I screamed when the gun fired again. I shut my eyes, not wanting to see Huncho killing, not wanting to see someone getting killed.
"This is the last life in this game Fox, if you cross paths with me again, I won't hesitate to blow your skull Fox."
Huncho grabbed him by the neck and pointed the gun to his head, facing him to his men.
"I shot him right next to his heart, which means you have about a few minutes before he dies. Would you rather save your boss or let him die to kill me? Your choice!"
Fox kept moaning, yelling and groaning out of pain. Two of them stepped closer but were interrupted when Huncho's gun pointed at their heads.
"All of you, out. Now!" Huncho screamed, "I will come with you."
They all listened to him and turned to leave the room. Concerned faces passed by me out the door. Huncho's arm was around Fox's neck, and his gun was still pointed at his head as they walked closer to me.
On his way out, our eyes met, and his message for me was so clear. He was angry and blameful at me for demanding him to let go of the person who did all of this to bring him down. I tried to follow him out, but he stopped me at the office door.
"Stay here."
I stayed but watched them walk to the front door. they all walked out, but when Huncho got to it, he threw Fox out and shut the door behind him. We shared the same eye contact again, but after a few seconds, he broke it again and walked to the window, watching them drive away from the gate.
Huncho raised his phone to his ear, and after a few seconds of silence, he spoke, "are you all okay at the gate?" He paused for a few more seconds, "call Mario...how don't you have the number of our doctor?" He waved his free hand in the air, "fine, I will send it to you."
"Huncho?" I called him right when the silence filled the room again.
He pulled me into his arms and hugged me tight against his body. I shut my eyes allowing my body to relax for just a few seconds. I was listening to his heart beating and the longer we hugged, the calmer it got. Then finally, he took a deep breath and pulled away.
"Huncho," I called again, wanting to talk to him for many reasons. I wanted to ask him if he was fine, I wanted to thank him for not killing Fox, and I wanted to tell him that he could talk to me if he needed someone to listen to him.
"Don't." He warned me. His back was still facing me.
"Why are you mad at me, Huncho? I saved you." I chose a very different question.
He slowly turned, his eyebrows raised, and his eyes widened, "saved?" He scoffed, "Elena, you made me give up the one person that wants me dead."
I watched him, confused that he wasn't happy no one got hurt, "why did you listen to me then if that was the right thing to do?"
He stayed silent, though I knew he had something to say.
"Tell me!" I pushed for an answer.
He looked away and said, "I didn't want to remind you of the day you saw Brad–" He refused to finish the sentence that brought my heart to my knees. I had nothing more to say. I stood there wondering what had happened all day. He was scared because of me, he called me Lena, he told me to run away, he told me to forget him, and he didn't kill Fox because of my feelings. I gulped to find the words that could make anything better, but I only said, "thank you."
A few seconds later, the boys walked in, rushing to Huncho and asking about what had happened.
"Nothing. I shot Fox, but he didn't die. They took him and left."
"Why didn't you just kill him, Huncho!" Damien yelled.
"I couldn't." He looked at me, but I looked away. I didn't want to see the same look he gave me earlier. "Damien," Huncho changed the subject, "I want to know how they were able to get into the mansion. I called the men on the door, and just one person was shot. I want to know where the hell these dogs were when Fox and his men got to my lab door without one gun shooting!"
"I am guessing it's Rio, you know," Fred started, catching all the eyes in the room, "it makes sense to let them in and run away to save himself and help the person he betrayed us for."
Huncho nodded, "that is very probable,"
"I told you, Huncho, I told you we can't trust someone who sold us to our enemy," Damien said.
"Damien," Huncho warned him, "just go check with the securities if they know or saw anything."
Damien nodded and left the room. I locked eyes with Huncho again, thanking him for what he did for me and begging him to forgive me for putting his life in danger. But he simply closed his eyes, shook his head and walked away.
