Wilhelm Stekel, an original co-worker of Freud's, swayed considerably from both the theory of congenital homosexuality and Freud's hypothesis. - Stekel believed that all human beings are bisexual, and that homosexuality lies dormant in all. Therefore the individual must actively repress his homosexuality, and try to sublimate it in friendships or other activities. If he does not succeed, then, in turn, he must repress his heterosexuality. Because repressions produce anxiety, shame, disgust and hatred, the heterosexual and the homosexual despise each other. Apparently, to be healthy, the individual must eliminate the neurotic reactions of repression, and remain bisexual. Alfred Adler, also a co-worker of Freud's, formulated what has come to be called the "Adlerian Masculine Protest Theory.
