Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, in their book Lesbian Woman, discuss some of the problems and ramifications involved in sorting out the lesbian "role." In the passage that follows, they are quoting from the comments of a mutual friend, and then offering their own opinion.
"The butchy appearing lesbians (the baby butches) often as not turn out to be quite feminine. I think these are the ones that lead some lesbians to deny the existence of any s****l polarity.
