Why didn’t he police the students who were skipping class? They’d ask. Simple, he’d say. Who was going to police them when they skipped out of work after graduation? Another doubt quashed, another gold star on Wally Inglass’s brownie-point scoreboard. But by requiring 100 percent attendance at pep rallies, he was imposing order and discipline on his charges. And besides, Wally enjoyed seeing those little pom-pom girls and cheerleaders expose the thin bands of black or gold cloth covering their crotches when they did those kicks and splits. Surely, for marrying Louise, he deserved some reward in this lifetime.
