CHAPTER 21THE DAMP AIR blowing through the bullet hole in the windshield of the Dodge felt good on his face. He rounded the long curve beyond the Starlight Club and saw the black Cadillac lying on its side in the mud beyond the ditch. A state police car was parked nearby and the crew of a wreck car was working around the Cadillac. A trooper stood by the side of the road waving curious motorists on. Ramsey pulled off the road and stopped. “Hey,” the trooper called to him. “You can’t stop there.” Ramsey sat quietly, his hands on the wheel. The trooper crossed the road, waving an arm. “Get going.” When he stood by the Dodge, Ramsey said, “Anybody hurt?” “I told you to move on.” Ramsey nodded at the wreck. “Was there a woman in the car?” “No. Just two men.” Ramsey breathed a deep sigh.
