CHAPTER 7IN THE MORNING she was waiting for him on the terrace. She wore a thin white sweater tucked into brief tan shorts. Her black hair was tied back with a red ribbon, and her long slim legs were a pale ivory in the sunlight. She kissed him lightly and the Mexican maid, looking sleepy-eyed and weary, served them breakfast. Afterward they sat talking in low tones and drinking coffee. She told him that she had no close relatives and that her mother had died when she was sixteen. She had attended school in Connecticut, eloped with a boy from Dartmouth when she was eighteen, divorced him a year later and returned to Texas to stay with her father.
