CHAPTER 12THE TOE OF a dusty tan shoe nudged Ramsey’s chin. He stirred feebly. The shoe nudged again, not so gently. Ramsey opened his eyes. He realized vaguely that he was sprawled on his stomach with his left cheek against a rug. He knew that Marcia was lying close to him. He could smell the faint perfume of her, and he could see the smooth slim whiteness of one leg protruding gracefully from beneath the pale blue robe. The other leg was bent beneath her. Her face was turned toward him. It was empty and slack and not beautiful any more. He closed his eyes quickly, remembering. The pain in his head was almost unbearable.
