CHAPTER NINEWednesday, October 28, 1987 ONE—The Station (5) “Call for you on line two, Anna,” Kurt the dispatcher yelled down the hallway. Anna thumbed off the typewriter, picked up the receiver, hit the flashing button located near the bottom of the phone, and said, “Ewerton Police Station. Anna Su—” “Where are you?” the old lady shouted into Anna’s ear. Praying that no one was listening in on the line, Anna said as calmly as possible, “I’m at the station…you know that. And I can’t accept personal calls like this.” “Oh, I beg your pardon. I meant to say, ‘Where were you?’” The old lady’s imperious, snotty-brat tone set Anna’s nerves on edge.
