2107 Words

CHAPTER SIXSunday, October 25, 1987 ONE—Anna (2) Anna Sudek hadn’t arrived home until well after four o’clock that Sunday morning, and as a consequence, she didn’t wake up until she felt the weak, only slightly warm beams of the sun branding her cheek as she curled on her right side, facing the west wall of her room. Mouth, still full from the hurry-up meal of Meow Mix she’d sprinkled in a big foil sheet cake pan a few minutes after Terry Von Kemp had dropped her off at her door, was curled in the valley of her bent knees, while Bruiser was staring out the window at the backyard. Anna pushed up the sleeve of her White Stag top—she hadn’t bothered to remove more than her shoes before crawling in bed—and glanced at her Lorus watch, a birthday gift to herself the previous January: 12:27.
