Chapter 12: Breaking Down Walls

833 Words
Evelyn's POV The next morning, I awoke to the soft glow of sunlight streaming through my bedroom window. Winter mornings in Maplebridge always had a certain charm, but today, it felt heavier. Ethan’s text from last night lingered in my mind. “It’s a start.” Those three words seemed so simple, but they held more weight than I expected. I had spent years building walls to keep Ethan out, convinced they were impenetrable. And yet, here I was, wondering if they were starting to crumble. “Mommy!” Lily’s voice interrupted my thoughts, loud and eager. I smiled, shaking myself from my reverie. “Coming!” I opened the door to find her holding her snow boots and coat, bouncing on her toes. “Can we go out and play again? Please?” I chuckled, ruffling her messy hair. “Breakfast first, then we’ll see.” --- After a quick breakfast, Lily and I bundled up and stepped outside. The snow was thick and pristine, and the whole town seemed still, as if waiting for something. We played for a while, building a snowman and watching the birds in the trees. It wasn’t long before I heard the familiar sound of crunching snow under boots. I turned around and saw Ethan approaching, a hesitant smile tugging at his lips. “Morning,” he greeted, his voice a little unsure. Lily was the first to spot him. “Daddy!” she squealed, her face lighting up with excitement. I froze for a moment. The way she said it… it was both beautiful and painful. It made me feel like I was standing in the middle of a dream I wasn’t sure I was ready to wake up from. Ethan’s eyes softened, and he crouched down to Lily’s level. “Hey, kiddo,” he said, a grin spreading across his face. “Nice snowman. What’s his name?” “Frosty!” she said proudly, holding up her snowman’s head. “Classic choice,” he said with a wink, giving her a high five. I stood back, watching them, my heart in a whirlwind of emotions. I had built walls around my heart for a reason, but seeing them together made me question everything. Ethan stood up and looked at me. “Can I help?” I hesitated for a beat, but then nodded. “Sure.” --- The morning went by faster than I expected. Ethan and I worked together to finish the snowman and build a snow fort. Lily was in her element, laughing and playing as we pretended to defend our fort from imaginary invaders. I hadn’t seen her this happy in a long time, and a part of me felt guilty for not giving her this sooner. Ethan wasn’t perfect, but I could see the effort he was putting in. He genuinely wanted to be a part of her life, and maybe, just maybe, I needed to let him. “Alright, Princess Lily,” Ethan said as he finished the last touches on the fort. “Your fortress is ready. What’s my next mission?” Lily clapped her hands excitedly. “Hot chocolate!” “Of course,” he said with a grin. “I’m on marshmallow duty.” --- Ethan’s POV I sat at the kitchen table, my mug of hot chocolate warm between my hands. I was trying not to stare at Evelyn too much, but I couldn’t help it. There was something different about today. Something lighter. Lily was busy telling us about her plans for the upcoming snowball fight with Ryan, and I listened intently. I was grateful for every moment I got to be here, to be part of this little family again. But there was still so much I needed to prove. To Evelyn. To myself. “Thank you,” I said quietly, looking across the table at Evelyn. She raised an eyebrow. “For what?” “For letting me be here,” I said, my voice steady but sincere. Her expression softened just a fraction. She looked down at her mug and then back up at me. “Don’t make me regret it, Ethan.” I nodded, my heart tightening. “I won’t.” --- Evelyn's POV As the morning came to an end, I watched Ethan leave, Lily waving enthusiastically as he walked toward his car. I was conflicted—my heart was telling me one thing, my mind another. But something inside me was starting to shift, just enough to make me wonder if I was ready to take a step forward. I checked my phone as I walked back inside, my fingers lingering over Ethan’s message from last night. “Thank you for letting me see Lily today. I know it’s not much, but it means everything to me.” I hesitated, but then typed a response. “It’s a start.” I hit send, feeling a little lighter, a little more open to whatever this new chapter might bring.
