Chapter 3: Unfinished Conversations

560 Words
Ethan's POV The cabin's warm glow stood in sharp contrast to the icy cold surrounding it. From where I leaned against my car, I could see Evelyn through the window, her silhouette framed by the soft light of the kitchen. I hadn't expected her to look at me the way she did earlier—guarded, uncertain, and just a little angry. But I couldn't blame her. I’d walked away all those years ago, leaving behind more than just memories. I glanced at my watch. It was late, but I couldn't bring myself to leave yet. Seeing Evelyn again, after everything, had stirred something in me that I thought I’d buried. The sound of boots crunching through the snow made me turn. Ryan was heading my way, his face set in a scowl. “What the hell are you doing here, Ethan?” he asked, his tone low but sharp. I straightened, meeting his gaze. “Good to see you too, Ryan.” “Cut the crap. You show up here, unannounced, after years of radio silence? What are you trying to pull?” I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “I didn’t plan for this. I didn’t even know she was back in town. I was here for business, and... I just saw her.” Ryan folded his arms, his protective stance unmistakable. “She doesn’t need this right now. Evelyn’s been through enough. If you’re here to stir up old wounds—” “I’m not,” I interrupted, my voice firm. “I’m not here to hurt her. If anything, I want to make things right.” Ryan laughed humorlessly. “Make things right? After everything you put her through? You think you can just show up and fix it all?” “I know I can’t undo the past,” I said quietly. “But I can try to be here for her now.” Ryan studied me for a long moment, his expression unreadable. “She’s not the same girl you left behind, Ethan. She’s stronger now. And she doesn’t need you swooping in to play the hero.” “I don’t want to be her hero,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. “I just... I just want to help.” Ryan’s eyes softened slightly, but his stance remained firm. “She’s got enough to deal with, especially with Lily. Don’t make things harder for her.” I nodded, understanding the warning in his tone. “I’m not here to cause trouble, Ryan. I swear.” He looked at me for another long moment before finally turning back toward the cabin. “If you mean that, you’ll leave her alone. Let her figure things out on her own.” I watched him disappear into the cabin, the door closing softly behind him. As much as I hated to admit it, Ryan was right. Evelyn didn’t need me complicating her life. But walking away from her again felt impossible. I climbed into my car and started the engine, the rumble breaking the stillness of the night. As I drove away, the sight of the cabin in my rearview mirror stayed with me, a bittersweet reminder of the woman I could never forget. Whatever happened next, I knew one thing for sure—I wasn’t ready to let her go. Not again.
