Evelyn's POV
The morning came far too quickly, sunlight streaming through the cabin windows as I tried to shake the remnants of a restless night. Every time I closed my eyes, Ethan’s face lingered, his words haunting me.
Lily’s giggles from the living room broke through my haze. I smiled despite myself, grateful for the small joy she brought to my otherwise tangled thoughts.
I walked into the room to find her playing with her toys, her laughter infectious. “Good morning, sweetheart,” I said, leaning down to kiss her head.
“Morning, Mama! Can we go outside today? I want to make a big snowman!”
“Of course,” I said, ruffling her hair. “Let’s have breakfast first.”
As I moved toward the kitchen, my phone buzzed on the counter. The sight of Ethan’s name on the screen made my stomach flip.
“Are you okay?” the text read.
I stared at the message for a moment before setting the phone down. I wasn’t ready to respond—not yet.
---
Later that afternoon, Lily and I were bundled up and outside, her tiny hands patting snow into the shape of a snowman’s base. Her laughter filled the air as she worked, and for a brief moment, the weight on my chest lifted.
Until I heard footsteps crunching in the snow behind me.
Turning, I saw Ethan approaching, his hands stuffed into his coat pockets, his expression cautious.
“Ethan,” I said, trying to keep my tone neutral.
“Hey,” he replied, glancing at Lily, who was too engrossed in her snowman to notice him. “I didn’t mean to intrude. I just... I wanted to check on you.”
“I’m fine,” I said quickly, my guard immediately going up.
He hesitated, his gaze flicking to Lily again. “She’s beautiful,” he said softly.
“She is,” I replied, my voice tight. “And she doesn’t need to be caught up in... whatever this is.”
“I understand,” he said, taking a step back. “I just—”
“Evelyn!” Ryan’s voice called out, interrupting Ethan.
I turned to see him walking up the path toward us, carrying a bag of groceries. His expression darkened slightly when he saw Ethan.
“Ryan,” I greeted, grateful for the distraction.
He handed me the bag, his gaze never leaving Ethan. “Thought you might need a few things.”
“Thanks,” I said, smiling faintly.
Ethan nodded at Ryan, his posture stiff. “I’ll leave you to it,” he said, stepping back.
As he walked away, Ryan turned to me, his concern evident. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” I said, though the tremor in my voice betrayed me.
Ryan’s hand rested lightly on my shoulder. “You don’t have to deal with this alone, Evelyn. I’m here for you.”
“I know,” I said, offering him a grateful smile.
But as I watched Ethan disappear into the trees, I couldn’t help but wonder if walking away from him again was truly the right choice—or if I was just running from the past.
Ethan’s POV
The cold air bit at my face as I trudged back to my car, my chest tight. Seeing Evelyn and Lily together had been a bittersweet reminder of everything I’d missed.
And then there was Ryan—hovering like a protective guard dog, his presence a clear message that I wasn’t welcome.
I clenched my fists, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. I couldn’t blame her for leaning on someone else. I’d forfeited my right to be by her side the moment I walked away.
But I wasn’t going to let Ryan or anyone else keep me from making things right. Evelyn deserved an explanation, and Lily deserved to know the truth.
As I started the car and drove away, a single thought consumed me: I wasn’t giving up—not this time.
