Chapter 104

A flicker of recognition sparked in Kane Adler’s sharp eyes. "You’re talking about the man with the chemistry set," he said, his voice dropping into a low, inquisitive hum. "The one who specializes in the... unconventional pharmaceutical applications." Fenris nodded, a shadow of a smile touching his lips. "Exactly. I’m speaking of Isaac Montgomery, the architect of the Oculus Divisio. He has been the unseen hand guiding my intelligence network for years. To put it bluntly, without his mastery of data and chemical coercion, the Warwolf Division would never have secured its iron grip on Jersey City. He didn't just win battles for me; he dismantled our enemies from the inside out." Jackson Hayes, the brooding director of the Shadow Division, felt a muscle twitch in his jaw. His eyes narrowed, reflecting a cold, defensive fire. "And what about Jordan Whitaker?" he asked, his voice laced with a subtle but dangerous frost. "Jordan was my lead field agent in this sector. If your man has been 'securing' the city, what has he done with my people?" Sensing the rising atmospheric pressure in the room, Patrick Donnelly stepped in to bridge the gap. "Jackson, rest assured, we have no interest in making martyrs out of your operatives. While it’s true that we neutralized the Shadow Division's local cell, we didn't spill a drop of their blood. They are currently... incapacitated. Isaac utilized a specialized sedative of his own design—fast-acting, painless, and completely reversible. Once the antidote is administered and they’ve had a few hours of rack time, they’ll be back on their feet with nothing but a mild headache. No permanent damage, I guarantee it." Jackson let out a sharp, dismissive huff and turned his gaze toward the frost-covered window. Despite the assurance, the professional insult of having his entire network put to sleep by a "pharmacist" clearly stung. Kane, ever the pragmatic Overlord, chose to ignore the ego-bruising and focused on the tactical asset. He looked back at Fenris. "So, where is this Isaac Montgomery now? If he’s as gifted as you say, I want him in front of me." Fenris chuckled, a sound of genuine exasperation. "The man is a ghost, even to me. He was in the thick of the kinetic exchange last night, but he emerged without so much as a scratch on his expensive suit. It’s not that he’s a coward—far from it—but he’s a supreme realist. He calculated the odds of a Shadow Eagle Clan victory the moment your boots hit the pavement. He knew our defection was the only logical outcome, so he simply stopped fighting. I’ve already signaled him. He’s navigating the snowdrifts as we speak. Expect him within the half-hour." Kane leaned back, his mind already weaving the newcomer into the tapestry of his Underworld Empire. "Very well," Kane said, his voice assuming a tone of finality. "We will evaluate Isaac when he arrives. Until then, the remaining forty-four strikers from the Warwolf elite will remain in a holding pattern. As for the reorganization... Fenris, I’ve held the title of commander for the Direwolf Syndicate in name, but the day-to-day operations have been spearheaded by Reno Keyes and Hank Steel. I assume your intelligence reports have already briefed you on their capabilities." Fenris nodded. "The strategist and the brawler. I’ve read their dossiers." "Good," Kane continued. "When you formally take command of the Direwolf Syndicate, you must forge a functional alliance with them immediately. I have spent months polishing those two into the weapons they are today—they are uncut diamonds of the Heartland. If you manage them correctly, they will be the most loyal and lethal lieutenants you’ve ever had. Do not waste their potential." "I understand, Boss," Fenris replied, his expression one of focused discipline. "I know how to handle high-caliber talent." "And as for the Leonine Division," Kane said, turning his attention to Nathaniel Cooper. "Nathaniel, you are inheriting a formidable force. The soldiers from the old Warwolf Division are battle-hardened and highly disciplined. They didn't just survive in Jersey City; they conquered it. I’m not handing you a group of rookies; I’m handing you a pack of hungry wolves. Fenris will provide you with a vetted roster of the most capable officers. Take them, mold them, and make them yours. I expect the Leonine Division to be an elite strike force that the rest of the United States underworld fears to even whisper about." Nathaniel’s eyes flashed with a cold, predatory ambition. "Give me two weeks, Boss. I’ll turn them into a legion of fanatics who would charge into a hail of bullets just to hear the sound of your name." The heavy silence that followed was interrupted by a soft, rhythmic tapping at the office door. It wasn't the frantic knock of a soldier; it was the measured, elegant cadence of someone who was entirely too comfortable in a room full of monsters. The door glided open, and Isaac Montgomery stepped into the light. The room seemed to collectively hold its breath. The man who stood before them was, by any objective standard, strikingly beautiful. He possessed a delicate, refined facial structure and an air of quiet, effortless grace that felt entirely out of place in a war room. He looked less like a cartel enforcer and more like a high-end fashion consultant or a virtuoso pianist. He offered a polite, shallow nod to Fenris before turning toward Kane Adler and performing a slow, respectful bow. "Commander Adler," he said, his voice as smooth and cool as silk. The gathered titans of the Shadow Eagle Clan felt a strange, involuntary sense of relief wash over them. The same thought flickered through every mind in the room: Thank God, he’s a man. Looking at those soft features and that "White-Faced" complexion, one couldn't help but imagine that with a slightly different wardrobe, he would be the most sought-after woman in the Rust Belt. Isaac seemed to notice the collective staring. A faint, embarrassed "blush" crept up his pale neck, making him look even more unnervingly attractive. Kane, who had been hardened by the beauty of women like Victoria Vance, Claire Valentine, and Sienna Summers, had to physically bite the tip of his tongue to snap himself out of the trance. He cleared his throat, the sound acting like a gunshot that broke the spell over the rest of the men. A chorus of awkward coughing filled the office as the hardened killers of the Shadow Eagle Clan tried to regain their composure. "Isaac Montgomery?" Kane asked, his voice regaining its sharp, commanding edge. "I am he, Boss," Isaac replied, his composure unshakable. "Fenris speaks of you as if you were the second coming of the Reaper. The fact that you managed to neutralize the Shadow Division's presence in Jersey City and orchestrated the collapse of the Mad Tiger Crew's assault is... impressive. The Shadow Eagle Clan has a vast platform, and we do not let talent rot in the shadows. I’m going to give you an opportunity to prove your worth." Kane stood up, walking toward a large map of the Heartland. "From this moment forward, I am bifurcating the Shadow Division. Jackson Hayes will continue to lead Group One, focusing exclusively on the kinetic intelligence of the underworld—g**g movements, tactical threats, and street-level subversion. You, Isaac, will command Group Two. Your mandate will be the 'Clean' side of the empire: corporate espionage, government infiltration, and political leverage." He turned back to look at the two men. "One group handles the blood; the other handles the ink. You are two sides of the same coin. You will operate independently but collaborate when the mission dictates. We are moving toward the total unification of Ashbourne State, and the FBI and the state Governor will become as much of an obstacle as any rival g**g. The battlefield is changing, and I need a surgeon just as much as I need a butcher. Do you both understand?" Jackson Hayes took a deep, stabilizing breath. "Understood, Boss." Isaac smiled—a thin, enigmatic expression that didn't quite reach his eyes. He realized instantly the weight of the responsibility he had just been handed. In the Underworld Empire, the man who controls the information controls the lifeblood of the organization. To be given such power so soon after a defection was either an act of supreme madness or a display of absolute confidence. "I am honored by your trust, Boss," Isaac said softly. "I will ensure the Shadow Division's second wing becomes a nightmare for our enemies in high places." Kane turned back to Fenris. "Since Isaac is taking twelve strikers from your elite hunters to form his core team, the remaining thirty-two will be divided equally. Eight veteran 'Wolf' strikers to each of the four main divisions. Ford, handle the logistics of the transfer." As the sun climbed higher over the snow-covered skyline of Larkspur, the meeting finally drew to a close. The tension that had defined the last twenty-four hours began to dissipate, replaced by the heavy, sluggish exhaustion of victory. "We’re done for now," Kane announced, exhaling a long plume of breath. "The blizzard has the city in a chokehold, which means the Five-Star Council can't move their heavy armor against us today. Go find a bed. Get some sleep." Patrick Donnelly stood up, stretching his aching limbs. "I’ll handle the accommodations. There’s a three-star hotel integrated into the North Wing of the tower. It’s secure, warm, and the bar is fully stocked." Bobby, the glutton of Unit Three, stood up with a wide, toothy grin. "Food, drink, and a real mattress? Hell, that’s better than Christmas." Colin, always the instigator, leaned over and nudged Bobby. "Hey, you want me to call up a 'hostess' for you? I hear this hotel has elite service for VIPs like us." Bobby rubbed the back of his neck, his face turning a deep shade of crimson. "I... I wouldn't know what to do with one of 'em," he stammered, his sudden shyness contrasting hilariously with his reputation as a cold-blooded killer. The room erupted in a rare moment of genuine laughter, the sound of Brothers bonding over the absurdity of their lives. As the men began to filter out toward the hotel, Kane caught Jackson Hayes's eye. "One more thing, Jackson. Send word to the Central Hub. I want every division commander, every deputy, and... I want Yolanda Finn there as well. I want everyone in the main hall by 3:00 PM tomorrow. I have an announcement that will change the trajectory of this Underworld Empire forever." The storm outside might have been fading, but within the Shadow Eagle Clan, a much larger tempest was just beginning to brew.
