I look at Annie as she finally falls asleep. It takes her a while and I'm not sure if she's pretending at first, or just has a hard time getting to sleep. But once her breathing evens out and her muscles relax, I know she's finally down. I understand why she might be so on guard with me, I'm a stranger and despite what I told her, I do feel like this is a kidnapping. This wasn't how I wanted any of this to go, I thought once she knew her grandfather had sent me she would be over the moon to get back to her home and her family. I didn't anticipate this level of resistance. Maybe that was my mistake. Maybe I should have realized that after two years her home might be a foreign place to her.
