Chapter 3: Into the Shadows It was an uncomfortably silent journey with Seraphina. The thickness of the forestland seemed to swallow any sound, . Aria followed behind, her mind still reeling with questions. With every step she take away from Crescent Howl pack territory, she was literally walking into the unknown, but turning backward was not an option. The rejection still haunting within her, an injury that refused to heal, but beneath the ache stirred another, darker feeling-a need for answers, perhaps even revenge. Seraphina moved with delicate ease, as if almost out of this world, and with a supernatural kind of confidence-as if she had walked the path a great many times before. She dodged in and out among the trees, Aria doing her best to keep up, though every now and then Seraphina would glance back, her eyes gleaming with strange patience and expectation. After what felt like hours, the trees began to thin out. The heavy, suffocating silence gave way to the sound of a river in the distance, its gentle rush offering temporary respite. Aria's legs burned, her muscles screaming in protest, but she forced herself to keep up the pace. She couldn't afford to appear weak. Not now. "Where are we going?" Aria finally asked into the silence. Seraphina didn't stop walking but replied calmly, "To a place where you will be safe. To a place where you can learn." Aria frowned. "Learn what exactly?" Seraphina's smile was slight but there, a knowing glint in her eyes. "You will see soon enough. She wasn't satisfied with that, but a little voice in her head whispered that to push for more would get her nothing but silence. Seraphina did know something, but Aria had no other choice than to trust her-at least for the time being. There was no going back to Crescent Howl, not after what Kieran had done. The trees fell away to a narrow path chipped into the side of a rocky hillside. It arced upward and vanished in a jagged cliffside, looming high above them. The air took on a thinner quality, colder, as they ascended higher. Aria's breath turned misty in the chilled night, and the wind nipped at her skin. Finally, they crested the top of the trail, and Aria's eyes went wide. Nestled between the cliffs was an ancient stone structure, partially cloaked by overgrown vines and moss. It looked like it had been abandoned for centuries, but there was an undeniable energy that pulsed through the air around it, sending the hair on Aria's arms standing on end. "This is it?" Aria asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Seraphina nodded, taking a step closer toward the heavy, weathered door. "This place is older than most can remember. It was once home to a pack long forgotten, but now it serves another purpose. She kicked the door open surprisingly easily, and Aria demurred, letting herself be pulled inside after her. The interior was dimly lit by crystals glowing faintly in the stone walls, casting long shadows across the floor. The air was thick with damp earth and the scent of something else-ancient, as if the very stones themselves held stories to tell. As they further descended into the structure, Aria's eyes gradually accustomed themselves to the low light. She made out markings on the walls-strange symbols that joined and twisted if she stared at them for too long. The deeper in they pressed, the grater her feeling of unease. At last Seraphina stopped before a heavy wooden door at the far end of a narrow corridor. She turned, her face inscrutable in the poor light. "You are not the only one who has come here for protection," Seraphina said. "There are others." Aria's stomach twisted. Others? She had not considered that. What kind of place was this? Seraphina opened the door and revealed a large room beyond. Inside it, several figures stood around a long stone table. They turned to look at Aria, eyes sharp with curiosity. An electric tension in the air seemed to weariness on the skin. Aria, this is the others," Seraphina said, stepping aside to let her enter. "They have been waiting for you." Aria wavered, but the eyes of the strangers seemed to bore into her, pulling her into the room. There were four altogether, each one so different from the other. The tall muscular man stood closest to the table, crossing his arms over his chest, with a scar running down his face. His expression was unreadable, yet something sharp within told Aria that he wasn't a man to be trifled with. The woman beside him was slender, dark of hair, its loose waves falling about her shoulders. Her eyes were bright and calculating; something in their depths raised Aria's wariness instantly. The third was an older woman, her silver hair pulled back into a tight braid. Her carriage was commanding, her posture rigid, her expression unsmiling. She looked Aria up and down, weighing her worth in that one glance it seemed. Farther down the table sat a boy, really, no bigger than sixteen, with an uncouth look in his eyes, his shaggy blond hair falling in. He barely turned a glance toward Aria, and if he did, it was as if she meant nothing to him. "These are those that will help you," Seraphina said in her soft yet commanding voice. "All of them have a part in what is going to happen. Aria's heart was pounding. What's to come? She didn't understand what Seraphina meant, and before she could ask, the older woman with the silver hair spoke. "She's the one, then?" the woman asked. Her voice was sharp. Seraphina nodded. "She is." The woman's eyes narrowed. "She doesn't look it" Aria bristled at the remark, but before she could respond, the muscular man with the scar spoke up. "It's not about what she looks like," he said in a deep voice. "It's about what she can do." Aria's breath caught as they spoke of her like she wasn't even in the room. "I don't even know what I am able to do," she replied, steady, while inside her, alarm was rising. The girl with the dark hair smiled, though there was no hint of warmth in it. "You will." The boy at the far end of the table finally looked up; for the first time, his eyes met Aria's. They were piercing green, he kept on staring at her. "Do you feel it?" he asked softly but clear. "The power inside you. It's growing. Aria swallowed hard. She'd felt it, since Kieran had rejected her, but she hadn't wanted to admit it. It was terrifying, this thing inside her, this power she didn't understand. Seraphina stepped forward, her eyes locking on Aria. "This place will help you unlock it. But it won't be easy and it won't be without cost. Aria's pulse quickened. She had come here to escape, to find answers, but now it seemed she'd stepped into another world of danger and mystery. A feeling deeper told her this was only the beginning of something big ahead.
